In the early 1880s, Gustav Mahler fell in love with a singer at the
opera house in Kassel, where he was musical director. His unrequited
passion moved him to pen six love poems, four of which he set to music
as Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer).
Last June, Measha Brueggergosman performed the song cycle during the
2010 Risør Chamber Music Festival in Norway. The Canadian soprano will
sing Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen again during the December
3 concert of the four-day Risør Chamber Music Festival residency.
