On May 5, 2011, Carnegie Hall celebrated its anniversary exactly 120 years to the day after it first opened its doors in 1891. Chaired by Trustee Mercedes Bass, this star-studded event began with a concert by the New York Philharmonic, featuring Gil Shaham and trustee artists Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, and Audra McDonald. Following the concert, guests "tripped the light fantastic" with Peter Duchin and his orchestra at an elegant Dinner-Dance at The Plaza Hotel.
For those who could not be there, do not despair!
The concert was recorded for nationwide broadcast tonight—May 31—on PBS by THIRTEEN for WNET’s Great Performances. Classical 105.9 FM WQXR in New York will also broadcast the concert and stream it online at wqxr.org at 8 PM EST.
