Having celebrated the real thing and seen The New York Pops commemorate it earlier this season, this installment of Live from Carnegie Hall celebrates the fifth anniversary of Rufus Wainwright's tribute to Judy Garland's famous Carnegie Hall concert.
Artist: Rufus WainwrightAlbum: Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie HallLabel: GeffenDate Recorded: June 14 and 15, 2006Fun Fact: Judy Garland's younger daughter, Lorna Luft, remembers joining her mother onstage during the original 1961 concert; she performed with Wainwright during his 2006 concert; and sang with Steven Reineke and The New York Pops as they recreated the concert in March 2011.
Blender magazine called Rufus Wainwright's recreation of Judy Garland's iconic 1961 Carnegie Hall concert "a public act of worship, a fabulous stunt." As Wainwright and musical director Stephen Oremus strove to faithfully recreate the spirit and sound of the 1961 concert, the first night sold out and a second performance was added. The live audience's reaction and the album reviews suggest that they achieved their aims. In keeping with Garland's introduction of her children during the 1961 concert, Rufus Wainwright turned these concerts into a family affair when his mother, Kate McGarrigle, and sister, Martha Wainwright, performed.
The public response was so positive that an additional four shows were produced—one at L'Olympia in Paris, one at the Hollywood Bowl Los Angeles, and two at the London Palladium (from which the video below is taken).
