On April 24, 2012, for one-night-only, Carnegie Hall presents a concert performance of The Sound of Music in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. This gala benefit of the beloved musical with a timeless score by Rodgers & Hammerstein will support Carnegie Hall's artistic and educational programs of the Weill Music Institute. Gary Griffin (The Color Purple) directs the production, with Rob Fisher (Chicago) serving as musical director and conductor of the Orchestra of St. Luke's. The cast will be announced at a later date.
As a continuation of Carnegie Hall's successful collaboration with the Rodgers & Hammerstein office, The Sound of Music follows in the footsteps of other landmark musical productions at Carnegie Hall, including Show Boat, South Pacific, and Carousel. With a magnificent score that features many favorites—"My Favorite Things," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," and "Edelweiss," among others—The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria, Captain von Trapp, and their singing family in pre–World War II Salzburg, Austria. This concert marks the first time this musical has been heard in New York City since the 1998 revival—more than a decade ago!
