• Kaija Saariaho: Inspiring Young Artists Globally

Currently engaged as composer-in-residence at the NJO (Nationaal Jeugd Orkest) Summer Academy for young musicians in the Netherlands, Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho is The Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair at Carnegie Hall throughout the 2011–2012 season.

In addition to multiple concerts that feature her compositions, Saariaho teams up with cellist Anssi Karttunen in March 2012 to lead a Carnegie Hall Professional Training Workshop. Designed for young composers and solo string players, the workshop culminates in Zankel Hall performances of repertoire by Saariaho and new works by the participating composers.

An invaluable way to learn firsthand about the collaborative process of creating new music, the deadline for applications is September 1.
