On this Christmas Day 2011, Live from Carnegie Hall revisits Christmas 1991's star-studded concert recording of two of America's best-loved female singers.
Album: A Carnegie Hall ChristmasArtists: Kathleen Battle, Frederica von Stade, Wynton Marsalis Septet, André Previn, Robert De Cormier, and the Orchestra of St. Luke'sDate Recorded: December 8, 1991Fun Fact: PBS filmed the concert and broadcast it, fully edited, just three days later.
For this Christmas concert that featured some of the biggest names in classical and jazz music, the Carnegie Hall stage was covered with three winter-themed panels, designed by theatrical set-designers John Michael Deegan and Sarah Conly, and inspired by Russian lacquer boxes.
This was a night of multiple musical influences: Ms. Battle and Ms. von Stade wove a thread from Sophie and Octavian's love duet from Der Rosenkavalier into an otherwise traditional rendition of "The 12 Days of Christmas"; the Wynton Marsalis Septet performed jazzed-up versions of "Winter Wonderland" and "Joy to the World"; and "Mary's Little Boy Child" added a Caribbean feel to this Carnegie Hall Christmas.
