• John Adams on his Absolute Jest

The American Mavericks concert on March 27 includes the New York premiere of John Adams's Absolute Jest, with Michael Tilson Thomas leading the San Francisco Symphony and the St. Lawrence String Quartet.

Here, the composer reveals that the inspiration for the piece was a performance by Tilson Thomas of Stravinsky's Pulcinella and how he incorporated orchestra and string quartet into the piece.

Absolute Jest was commissioned by Carnegie Hall and the San Francisco Symphony, with support from the Phyllis C. Wattis Fund for New Works of Music.
