Don't miss The Song Continues, an annual festival founded by iconic American singer Marilyn Horne, celebrating the art of song while nurturing gifted young vocal talent. Recitals, public master classes, and other exciting events continue all week long, with tickets starting at just $15 or $10 for students.

As I prepare for my debut recital this evening in Weill Recital Hall as part of The Song Continues, I can’t help but look back on how I got to this point.

My first vocal performance in New York City was as a participant in The Song Continues workshop in January 2011. I participated in Kurt Moll’s master class in Zankel Hall, and I was first on the program! I sang Strauss’s “Morgen,” a German song by a German master. Needless to say, I was NERVOUS!

I still remember walking out onto the stage where so many great singers had performed before me. Herr Moll was so kind and generous in his instruction, reminding me to just “sing, don’t make art.” That simple advice was a revelation that has helped me ever since.

As part of the workshop, I participated in a roundtable discussion with leaders in the field and learned how to best spread the art of recital in our communities. It turns out that recital can be as simple as a salon or as elaborate as a recital hall. The possibilities are endless! It was also enlightening to hear from Marilyn Horne not only about recital work, but also about the life of a singer.

Since then, I was honored to be presented last season on Carnegie Hall’s Neighborhood Concert series. I sang to a packed house at Advent Lutheran Church, and I was able to really roll up my sleeves and spread the song. I can’t wait to do the same in my upcoming recital on January 15 with pianist Ken Noda!
