Our 2012–2013 Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair Osvaldo Golijov loves the human voice as musical instrument and sees it as part of our everyday existence. During a conversation with Carnegie Hall about his La Pasión según San Marcos, he remarked, "When I hear Italian people singing Verdi's operas from beginning to end with all the characters, I say, 'Wow, Verdi. I love you!' And it's taxi drivers and bakers and so forth—people who are not musicians. That there exists a music that could become part of the people and their lives is really as much as I can aspire to."
Throughout the remainder of this season, Golijov's attention to writing for voice will be fully on display at Carnegie Hall. As well as the much-anticipated March 10 performance of La Pasión según San Marcos by members of Schola Cantorum de Venezuela (to which the piece is dedicated) together with high school singers from throughout New York City, and "Lúa Descolorida" with one of his closest collaborators, Dawn Upshaw (along with Ireland's Crash Ensemble and Alan Pierson) on May 17, The Collegiate Chorale performs his Oceana on February 27.
