PIOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 3

Inspired by a visit to Van Cleef and Arpels, George Balanchine distilled the brilliant facets of three precious stones into a grand display - the first ever, plot less full-length ballet. Emeralds moves at Fauré’s mesmerizing pace, while Rubies races like lightning through Stravinsky’s jazzy Capriccio.

Concluding the evening is Diamonds, set to Tchaikovsky’s spectacular Symphony No. 3 in D major. Reflective of the order and grandeur of Imperial Russia and St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre, where Balanchine trained, it has been said that if the Russian inheritance of ballet were lost, Diamonds would still communicate its essence.
