    Workshop for Composers and Ensembles

    November 15–20, 2013

    Pulitzer Prize–winning composer David Lang, 2013–2014 holder of the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair at Carnegie Hall, leads a uniquely structured workshop in which young composers and ensembles work together on new works commissioned by Carnegie Hall. He is joined by Claire Chase and members of the International Contemporary Ensemble to coach the young artists through this dynamic process of collaboration.

    Carnegie Hall will commission invited composers to write a work of approximately 15 minutes’ duration to be premiered at Zankel Hall at the conclusion of the workshop. Composers must apply together with an ensemble (suggested size of 3–15 performers, instrumental, vocal, and/or electronic) for which they wish to write. During the week, participants will have to the opportunity to discuss the life of a new piece, how to present their work on stage and in the media, and how to connect effectively—and entrepreneurially—with audiences.

  • Application Requirements

    The application for this workshop is available online. In addition to completing the application form, composers and ensembles must upload the following (within a single application):

    For composers:

    • • Three scores of works written in the last five years (PDF preferred) 
    • • Recordings (audio or video) of the three works submitted, if available (Please do not submit MIDI recordings.)
    • • One-page resume or biography (PDF preferred)

    For ensembles:

    • • Two recordings (audio or video) of works composed since 1950, at least one of which should have been written since 1990. The recordings may be complete works or movements/extracts, not to exceed 10 minutes each. 
    • • An ensemble biography that includes a list of members and their instruments/roles (PDF preferred)

    Application Fee

    A $30 application fee is due upon submission of the online application.

  • Workshop Details

    Scores will be due from commissioned composers no later than September 1, 2013. Ensembles are expected to arrive with the piece they will premiere already rehearsed and prepared for performance. All invited participants are asked to arrive in New York City the day before the workshop begins and depart the day after. Shared hotel accommodation is provided on that basis. Expenses up to $300 will be reimbursed to each participant (to a maximum of $2,500 per ensemble) traveling from outside the New York City area.
