The Thelonious Monk Quartet, featuring saxophonist John Coltrane, performs on “Thanksgiving Jazz,” a concert to benefit the Morningside Community Center, on November 29. Ray Charles, the Sonny Rollins Trio, Dizzy Gillespie and His Orchestra, the Zoot Sims Quartet with Chet Baker, and Billie Holiday also appeared.

The news nearly 50 years later that a Voice of America recording of the concert had been found at the Library of Congress rocked the jazz world, since it documented the legendary collaboration between Monk and Coltrane. Although short-lived, Coltrane’s time in Monk’s group is seen as a key turning point in the saxophonist’s musical development. Blue Note Records released a portion of the concert in 2005; it was a hit and instant classic.
