CARNEGIEHALL PRESENTS URUGUAYAN SINGER/SONGWRITER
JORGE DREXLER IN ZANKEL HALL ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 22
On Saturday, January 22 at 10:00 p.m. in Zankel Hall,singer/songwriter Jorge Drexler performs an elegant evening of popularmusic rooted in the urban rhythmic style of his native Uruguay. Joined by bandmates, Borja Barrueta (drums, lap steel guitar); Sebastián Merlín(percussion, marimba, acoustic guitar); Matías Cella (bass, ukulele) andCarlos Campón (theremin, lap steel guitar); Drexler will perform selectionsfrom his Grammy Award-nominated 2010 live album “Amar La Trama” ( “Loving theStory”)—a record which focuses on the plot of the love story rather than itsfinal destination. This concert is presented in partnership with the WorldMusic Institute.
Known for his distinctive combination of traditional Uruguayan melodies withtraces of bossa nova, pop, and electronica, Drexler’s music encompass themes oflove, identity, race, and religion as with his composition, “Al Otro Lado DelRio” from the soundtrack of the 2004 film The Motorcycle Diaries, whichwon an Academy Award for Best Original Song. With his most recent recording,Drexler continues to demonstrate his mastery of unforgettable melodies andurban rhythms.
Prior to Drexler’s performance, beginning at 9:00 p.m., concert-goers areinvited to enjoy a laid-back pre-concert experience in the Zankel Hall loungeand meet others who share their passion for music. The first 200 concert-goersto arrive will receive a complimentary drink, courtesy of Carnegie Hall.
