On Sunday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Zankel Hall, Ensemble ACJW—the performance arm of The Academy—continues its 2012–2013 season with a concert led by renowned conductor and baroque music specialist Harry Bicket. The program includes two Bach works—Cantata No. 51: Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen! with guest soprano Lucy Crowe and the Concerto for Oboe, Violin, and Continuo in C Minor, BWV 1060—plus music by two of Bach’s contemporaries, Gluck’s Suite from Armide and Jean-Fery Rebel’s Les élémens (“The Elements”).

Other winter concerts in New York City by Ensemble ACJW include a free program at The Juilliard School’s Paul Hall on Wednesday, January 9 at 8:00 p.m. of Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps and Mozart’s Serenade for Winds in C Minor, K.388, and in Weill Recital Hall on Monday, February 18 at 7:30 p.m. with a program comprising Poulenc’s Sextet for Piano and Winds; Brahms’s Trio in E-flat Major for Violin, Horn, and Piano; and the New York premiere of a new work by Brooklyn-based composer Missy Mazzoli commissioned by Carnegie Hall.

Ensemble ACJW will give the world premiere of the Missy Mazzoli work on February 15 as part of its weeklong residency at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. From February 12–16, the Academy musicians will perform in traditional and non-traditional settings across the Skidmore campus and in the surrounding community. The residency includes performances in Arthur Zankel Music Center, master classes given to students in the Skidmore music department, classroom visits, composition reading sessions with student and area composers, and performances in community venues and K–12 classrooms in the Saratoga Springs area.

About the Artists
Internationally renowned as an opera and concert conductor, Harry Bicket is especially noted for his interpretation of Baroque and Classical repertoire. In 2007, he became artistic director of The English Concert, one of the UK’s finest period orchestras. Plans for the 2012–2013 season and beyond include extensive touring and recording commitments with The English Concert and return performances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera (La Clemenza di Tito, Giulio Cesare), Canadian Opera Company, Gran Teatre del Liceu, and Houston Grand Opera. He has recently conducted Handel opera productions for The Metropolitan Opera (Rodelinda), Lyric Opera of Chicago (Rinaldo), and Opéra National de Bordeaux (Alcina), as well as many projects with The English Concert featuring soloists such as Ian Bostridge, Andreas Scholl, and Vesselina Kasarova. This summer, he conducted The English Concert at both the BBC Proms and at the Edinburgh International Festival in performance with countertenor David Daniels. Highlights of recent seasons include guest conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, as well as critically acclaimed opera productions for the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Minnesota Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Theater an der Wien, and The Atlanta Opera. Mr. Bicket has appeared at major US festivals such as Glimmerglass, Spoleto, Aspen, and Santa Fe. His discography includes releases with Ian Bostridge, David Daniels, Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Sarah Connolly, Rosemary Joshua, Elizabeth Watts, and most recently with Lucy Crowe and The English Concert.

Born in Staffordshire, England, Lucy Crowe studied at the Royal Academy of Music and has since established herself as one of the leading lyric sopranos of her generation. Her operatic roles include Belinda (Dido and Aeneas) and Gilda (Rigoletto) for the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden; Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier) for the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper; Poppea (Agrippina) and Drusilla (L’incoronazione di Poppea) for English National Opera; Dorinda (Orlando) in Lille, Dijon, and Paris; and the Vixen in The Cunning Little Vixen for Glyndebourne Festival Opera. She made her US Opera debut as Iole in Handel’s Hercules for the Lyric Opera of Chicago. In concert, Ms. Crowe has performed with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Richard Tognetti; The Philadelphia Orchestra with Yannick Nézet-Séguin; City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with Andris Nelsons, Emmanuelle Haim, and Sakari Oramo; Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with Sir Charles Mackerras and Richard Egarr; Scottish Chamber Orchestra with Mackerras and Nézet-Séguin; The Sixteen with Harry Christophers; Gabrieli Consort and Players with Paul McCreesh; and Monteverdi Orchestra with Sir John Eliot Gardiner. She has performed at the Aldeburgh, Edinburgh, Salzburg, Brighton, Belfast, Norfolk and Norwich, and Mostly Mozart music festivals. Ms. Crowe’s recordings include Handel: Il pastor fido and a Handel and Vivaldi disc with La Nuova Musica (harmonia mundi), ll caro Sassone: Handel in Italy with Harry Bicket and The English Concert (harmonia mundi), a Lutoslawski recording with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (Chandos Records), Handel’s Alceste with the Early Opera Company (Chandos Records), and Eccles’s The Judgement of Paris (Chandos Records).


The Academy
Created in 2007 by Carnegie Hall’s Executive and Artistic Director Clive Gillinson and The Juilliard School’s President Joseph W. As Ensemble ACJW, the fellows are an inspirational musical collective that has earned accolades from critics and audiences alike for the quality of its performances, as well as its fresh and open-minded approach, performing a wide range of music—from centuries past to works written days before an event—in a variety of performance venues. The group performs its own series at Carnegie Hall and regularly appears at The Juilliard School’s Paul Hall.

In addition to performance opportunities at the highest level, a robust program of professional development is an essential part of The Academy. Fellows partner with New York City public schools to share their artistry with—and become central resources for— music classrooms in the five boroughs.
