Since making his Carnegie Hall conducting debut in 1967 with the Toronto Symphony, Seiji Ozawa has returned for more than 170 performances. While the majority of his appearances have been with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, he has also conducted the Vienna Philhamonic Orchestra and the Saito Kinen Orchestra. Soloists who have performed under his direction include pianists Maurizio Pollini and Murray Perahia, soprano Jessye Norman, and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, whose 60th and 70th birthday concerts were both conducted by Maestro Ozawa. In addition to conducting the major works of the classical canon, Ozawa has conducted many world, US, and New York premieres of works by such composers as Tōru Takemitsu, Olivier Messiaen, György Ligeti, and John Cage.
