Music fit for a king! It's a little-known fact that Frederick the Great of Prussia was an enthusiastic amateur flutist and composer. Emmanuel Pahud and the exhilarating Les Violons du Roy perform music by an 18th-century enlightened despot, as well as his more musically illustrious counterparts, including J. S. Bach and his son, Carl Philipp Emanuel.

Andrea Marcon is a man on a mission: He wants to bring all the freshness and flash that made Vivaldi’s concertos so groundbreaking in their day to his own performances with the Venice Baroque Orchestra. “(They are) really like Beethoven’s solo concertos,” he told NPR Music, “where the soloist plays such a dominant role. This was not the case before Vivaldi.” You’ll hear some of these works on this program, along with music by Albinoni and Geminiani.
