Carnegie Hall Presents

Chamber Sessions I

Superb string quartets and a brilliant chamber orchestra perform music that span Mozart to modern-day rock star Jonny Greenwood. The Ebène Quartet brings its virtuosity to quartets by Mozart, Bartók, and Mendelssohn. Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato joins the Brentano String Quartet in music by Jake Heggie, including his arrangements of lullabies written by young mothers. The Australian Chamber Orchestra premieres a work by Radiohead guitarist and classical-music composer Greenwood, and performs favorites by Prokofiev, Haydn, and the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with Martin Fröst.

Encore:QUATUOR EBÈNE "Brazil Odyssey" (after Ari Barroso's "Aquarela do Brasil")
Quartets by two child prodigies grown up—Mozart and Mendelssohn—are featured. Mozart’s E-flat–Major Quartet, one of six dedicated to Haydn, is a masterful mix of the contemplative and boisterous. Mendelssohn took one of his youthful love songs and wove it into the fabric of his impassioned A-Minor Quartet. In a striking contrast, Bartók’s Fourth String Quartet is a visceral study in virtuosity and eerie night music.

JAKE HEGGIE Camille Claudel: Into the Fire (NY Premiere)

Encore:R. STRAUSS "Morgen," Op. 27, No. 4 (arr. Misha Amory)
A three-century–long French connection defines this program. Charpentier’s Suite confirms his reputation as one of the master melodists of the 17th century. Debussy’s String Quartet shimmers with color and beguiles with rhythmic and harmonic invention. Based on the tragic life of French sculptor Camille Claudel, Jake Heggie’s poignant song cycle is a tour de force for both singer and quartet. Luna Pearl Woolf arranges a set of lullabies written by teen songwriters.

MOZART Clarinet Concerto in A Major
JONNY GREENWOOD Water (NY Premiere)
HAYDN Symphony No. 83, "The Hen"
A new work by Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, a devotee of classical music, and Prokofiev’s witty piano miniatures arranged for orchestra provide contrasts to two Classical-era favorites: Haydn’s bubbly Symphony No. 83, “The Hen,” and Mozart’s beloved Clarinet Concerto with soloist Sharon Kam. Hailed by Time Out New York, Artistic Director Richard Tognetti and "his badass classical band ... don’t play New York nearly often enough. But, on the rare occasion that they do come in from Down Under, they leave an indelible mark on the city’s music scene."

The contemporary work on this program is part of My Time, My Music.
