Hear the instrumental music of the Renaissance and Baroque as audiences did when it was first composed. Elite musicians in the vanguard of the historically informed performance movement reveal the beauty and color of great masters before the time of Bach in the intimate setting of Weill Recital Hall. World-renowned gambist Jordi Savall performs a solo recital, viol consort Fretwork plays the intimate music of early English composers, and acclaimed harpsichordist Kristian Bezuidenhout shows why he’s one of the great keyboardists of our day. Join us after each of the concerts on this series for Salon Encores, a salon-style reception where you can enjoy drinks and merriment with fellow audience members and occasionally the evening’s artists.

Some of the most passionate and personal music of the Baroque was written by French composers who played the viola da gamba. The instrument and music by two of its greatest practitioners, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe and Marin Marais, will be featured along with other French masters. Cited for his “soulful sound and seamless phrasing” (The New York Times), Jordi Savall performs this gorgeous music.

The 17th century was a golden age of English music for multiple viols as composers wove together intricate strands of melody in compositions both intimate and expressive. The inventive fantasies of Purcell and others, along with stunning "In Nomine" settings—instrumental compositions based on a chant melody—were masterpieces of the genre. Fretwork, “the finest viol consort on the planet” (London Evening Standard), plays this resplendent music.
