Zakir Hussain

Tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain will work with participants in this workshop to explore accompaniment, spontaneity, and creativity through classical Indian music. This seven-day intensive workshop will focus on the improvisation of new works and the expression of emotion in performance. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit New York City area sites that are meaningful to Mr. Hussain and his colleagues joining the workshop.

The workshop precedes the Carnegie Hall Perspectives concerts featuring Zakir Hussain.

General Information

There is no tuition for this workshop. Carnegie Hall will arrange and pay for travel and shared housing for participants living outside of New York City. Participants must be available for the duration of the workshop, including evenings, and are expected to attend all workshop sessions.


Requirements and Application

Applications will be accepted from all instrumentalists and percussionists (no drum set please), between the ages of 18 and 30, interested in exploring improvisation through Indian classical traditions. Approximately 16 to 20 participants will be selected to participate in the workshop.

Application
Please complete the application form found here and return it with the following:

  • a current résume including: teachers, master classes, performing experiences, education/training, festivals, and awards.
  • two letters of recommendation from present or former music teachers, or from musicians of high standing. Letters may be sent separately from the application either by mail or by e-mail to ptw@weillmusicinstitute.org; letters must be marked clearly with the workshop name and applicant's name on the front of the envelope or in the subject line of the e-mail.
  • An audition video or recording, as described in the application
  • a non-refundable application fee of $40, payable by check or money order (to The Carnegie Hall Corporation) or credit card. A credit card form can be downloaded here.
All materials must be received by Carnegie Hall no later than Thursday, January 1, 2009.

Applicants will be informed of their workshop status on or before Friday, January 30, 2009.


Auditing

The workshop will be open to auditors during the portions of the workshop held at Carnegie Hall. Auditors will receive a complimentary ticket to the Young Artists Concert. The workshop schedule will be sent to auditors upon receipt of the registration form found here. The fee for auditing is $30 per day, and sessions are limited to 20 people.
