DAVE DOUGLAS WORKSHOP Creative Composition and Improvisation
For Composer–Performers
Application Deadline: September 15, 2009
Versatile trumpeter-composer Dave Douglas guides young jazz and creative composer-performers through an exploration of new works and innovative collaborations in this Professional Training Workshop. Throughout the week, participants from diverse musical backgrounds will work with Dave Douglas and guest artists—pianist Uri Caine and drummer Clarence Penn—on the creation, rehearsal, and production of original works that involve improvisation. The emerging composer-performers will be exposed to a variety of sessions on composition and scoring, ear training, rehearsal techniques, assessment of developing works, and improvisation.
This dynamic and exploratory week culminates in a final performance in Zankel Hall on February 12 with works created by the workshop's young artists and Dave Douglas.
Applications will be accepted from composer-performers between the ages of 18 and 32 who are interested in exploring creative composition and improvisation. Approximately 12 to 14 participants will be selected to participate in the workshop.
