RUSSIAN LESSON
 | | Tilson Thomas |
When a great conductor is also an inspiring teacher, the world of music benefits in many ways. On February 28, Michael Tilson Thomas, an acclaimed American conductor and devoted musical educator, comes to Carnegie Hall for a Discovery Concert that will explore one of the great works of the 20th century, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5.
Carnegie Hall has a long tradition of excellence in music education. An entire generation of music lovers still remembers Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts, filmed live at Carnegie Hall in the late 1950s and early 1960s and broadcast to millions of television viewers around the country. Following in that esteemed Carnegie Hall tradition is Sound Insights, a program of The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, which aims to make music more accessible to audiences young and old through the internet; pre-concert talks; Discovery Days, which include film screenings, panel discussions, and more; and Discovery Concerts, which give an in-depth look a particular work or genre in the classical repertoire. Michael Tilson Thomas—who leads the San Francisco Symphony’s own multimedia music education program, Keeping Score—is the perfect fit to host this Discovery Concert.
For this occasion, Maestro Tilson Thomas is joined onstage by the exciting New World Symphony—an orchestra he founded in 1987—whose stellar reputation attracts more than 1,000 emerging artists from around the world to compete each year for just 35 available fellowships in the organization. In the first half of the February 28 Discovery Concert program, Tilson Thomas and the orchestra will reveal the many dimensions and nuances of the great Russian composer’s monumental Fifth Symphony, through enlightening commentary and illustrative musical excerpts. The experience will conclude with a performance of the piece in its entirety, from its arresting opening notes through its poignant story of struggle and liberation.
As with all of the Sound Insights programs, Discovery Concerts are designed to enhance the concert experience for people of all ages and musical experience—from first-time concertgoers to die-hard fans and everyone in between—and reflect the Hall’s ongoing commitment to music education as an essential part of its mission.
