SPRING 2008 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES
PRESENTED BY THE WEILL MUSIC INSTITUTE AT CARNEGIE HALL
The McGraw-Hill Companies CarnegieKids for Ages 3 to 6;
Family Concerts at Carnegie Hall for Ages 5 to 12
Plus: Free Neighborhood Concerts in All Five Boroughs of New York City
This spring, The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall offers a variety of interactive and affordable events for kids and families, including McGraw-Hill Companies CarnegieKids, Family Concerts, and free Neighborhood Concerts in all five boroughs. With opportunities for preschoolers to adults, new listeners to emerging professional musicians, The Weill Music Institute plays a central role in Carnegie Hall’s commitment to making great music accessible to as many people as possible. The McGraw-Hill Companies CarnegieKids (Recommended for ages 3 to 6)
The McGraw-Hill Companies CarnegieKids program introduces children to one of the four instrument families of the orchestra and basic musical concepts through these fun, interactive 45-minute concerts. Children listen, sing, and move to engaging music and stories led by a host and small instrumental ensemble. Concerts take place in Carnegie Hall’s Kaplan Space and tickets are $6. This spring, The McGraw-Hill Companies CarnegieKids program features the percussion family of instruments.

Tuesday, March 4 to Saturday, March 8 at 10:00 and 11:30 a.m.
Tuesday, March 11 to Thursday, March 13 at 10:00 and 11:30 a.m.

Family Concerts (Recommended for ages 5 to 12)
Featuring music for the entire family, these one-hour, weekend afternoon concerts are designed for children ages 5–12 to experience the joy of attending a live musical performance. Programs in Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage and Zankel Hall showcase classical, jazz, and world music ensembles. Fun and engaging pre-concert activities allow children to meet artists one-on-one for an up-close look at the instruments they play. All tickets are affordably priced at $9. Family Concerts are sponsored by Bank of America, Carnegie Hall’s Proud Season Sponsor.

The Sonidos Latinos series originated at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in upstate New York and centers on the composers and music of Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Venezuela. For this performance, Michael Barrett, renowned conductor and head of Caramoor Center, brings the Sonidos Latinos Festival Ensemble to Carnegie Hall for an exploration of traditional instruments from Latin American countries, narrated by Jamie Bernstein.

Exploring Sounds of the Human Voice

This exciting exploration into the human voice will feature many opportunities for the audience to join in the fun of making music!

Symphony in Space

Explore the universe with John Morris Russell and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s on an extraterrestrial musical voyage. Striking NASA images are projected and set to music from Holst’s The Planets to Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony; selections by Bach and DvoĆák that inspired astronauts and aerospace engineers; and popular selections from Star Trek and Star Wars.

Musicians of The Academy
Sunday, May 18 at 1:00 p.m. in Zankel Hall
Music for the whole family, performed by Ensemble ACJW. Come to Carnegie Hall for a fun, interactive concert performed by the musicians of The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education—young professional musicians who inspire the music students of the NYC public schools.
Neighborhood Concerts
Now in its 32nd season, Carnegie Hall’s Neighborhood Concert Series presents free concerts for New Yorkers of all ages in collaboration with museums; colleges; libraries; community, cultural, and religious centers; and shelters throughout the five boroughs. Neighborhood Concerts, which reflect both the diverse sounds of the city and Carnegie Hall’s ever-expanding programming, offer classical, Latin, jazz, tango, doo-wop, bluegrass, Brazilian, African, Indian, Caribbean music, and more! These concerts are free and open to the public with many geared toward younger audiences. Don’t miss these opportunities to hear world class musicians in your own backyard!
The spring Neighborhood concert schedule will include more than 50 performances including: Ensemble ACJW at Kingsborough Community College on March 27 and at Queens College on March 28, the Vijay Iyer Trio at the Flushing Branch Library on April 6, and Avantango at the Brighton Beach Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library on May 13.
