The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall (WMI) announces its fall 2008 schedule of Professional Training Workshops. Of particular note is a new Orchestral Repertoire Workshop, November 9–14, designed for young brass and wind players who desire to learn orchestral performance and audition techniques, gaining insight into the life of a professional orchestral player from leading musicians at three of the country’s premier orchestras: the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and The Philadelphia Orchestra. Additional fall 2008 workshops include those led by composer Osvaldo Golijov and soprano Dawn Upshaw for young composers and singers (October 3–8; with second session in May 3–10) and Claude and Pamela Frank on “Finding the Voice in Beethoven and Schubert” for violin sonatas and piano trios (December 7–14).
Professional Training Workshops presented by The Weill Music Institute are designed for artists between the ages of 18 to 35 and offer a unique opportunity for young musicians to explore performance and rehearsal practices, as well as specialized repertoire with some of today’s leading artists. Workshops include master classes and sessions of intensive performance preparation for emerging professional musicians, led by artists from many different musical styles and backgrounds. Most workshops feature at least one element that is accessible to the public in the form of a concert or open master class. Travel and housing for participants traveling from outside of New York City is arranged and paid for by Carnegie Hall. The workshops are tuition-free for participants and open to observation by auditors. Additional information and online applications are available at www.carnegiehall.org/workshops.
In the 2008–09 season, WMI presents seven Professional Training Workshops. In addition to the three fall sessions, other upcoming Workshops include: The Song Continues…, the annual celebration of the vocal recital led by legendary mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, including master classes this year led by conductor James Levine and pianist Martin Katz (January 20–22, 2009); György and Márta Kurtág’s on the music of Beethoven, Bartók, and Kurtág, part of the Hungarian composer’s first visit to New York (February 2–6, 2009); conductor Helmuth Rilling in the annual Carnegie Hall Choral Workshop, this year focused on Haydn’s Creation (February 9–14, 2009); and Zakir Hussain’s workshop exploring improvisation in new works and creativity through classical Indian music (April 13–19, 2009). *NEW* Orchestral Repertoire Workshop: Winds and Brass
November 9–14, 2008
Led by principal wind and brass musicians from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Weill Music Institute’s new Orchestral Repertoire Workshop aims to guide young artists through the process of auditioning, rehearsing, and performing with a professional orchestra. During the week, participants will come into contact with a variety of musical styles and learn about orchestral culture from the workshop's diverse faculty. Participants will have the opportunity to attend performances by all three premier orchestras, take one-on-one lessons with lead musicians from one of the three orchestras, delve into major repertoire in wind and brass sectionals rehearsals, and perform in public mock auditions on November 11 and 12 with comments from the distinguished faculty.
Faculty for this workshop includes: Michael Parloff (Principal Flute, The Beth W. and Gary A. Glynn Chair, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Elaine Douvas (Principal Oboe, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Julie Landsman (Principal Horn, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Joseph Alessi (Principal Trombone, The Gurnee F. and Marjorie L. Hart Chair, New York Philharmonic Orchestra), and Carol Jantsch (Principal Tuba, The Philadelphia Orchestra). Trumpet, clarinet, and bassoon faculty are to be announced.
Claude and Pamela Frank Workshop: Finding the Voice in Beethoven and Schubert
December 7–14, 2008
The dynamic father-daughter team of Claude and Pamela Frank will delve into the violin sonatas and piano trios of Beethoven and Schubert, exploring the vocal music qualities of these instrumental works. During the week, participants will also have an opportunity for vocal coaching on this repertoire—to hear how the instrumental music can breathe and sing like the human voice—with renowned soprano Benita Valente. With special attention paid to Beethoven’s Piano Trio, Op. 1, No. 2; and Piano and Violin Sonata, Op. 96, this workshop includes coaching sessions and two public master classes on December 10 and 11, culminating in two concerts in Weill Recital Hall on December 13 and 14.
