GRAMMY AWARD–WINNING VIRTUOSOS
DOUBLE BASSIST EDGAR MEYER AND MANDOLINIST CHRIS THILE
PERFORM AN EVENING OF THEIR ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS
IN STERN AUDITORIUM/PERELMAN STAGE ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29
Violinist Mark O’Connor Joins Duo as Special Guest
On Wednesday, October 29 at 8:00 p.m., mandolinist Chris Thile, leader of the quintet the Punch Brothers and former Nickel Creek vocalist-mandolin player, and double bassist Edgar Meyer perform an evening of their original compositions in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. The duo’s wide-ranging musical dialogue incorporates bluegrass, folk, country and classical elements. Violinist Mark O’Connor joins Meyer and Thile on stage as a special guest for this evening of eclectic, high-energy music.
Meyer and Thile, both of whom are Grammy winners, will release their first recording collaboration on Nonesuch on September 23. Edgar Meyer Chris Thile was made in, quite literally, the most down home of settings. Co-writing a dozen compositions, the pair recorded their work at Meyer’s house in Nashville. No frills, no words and no other musicians were needed, keeping the focus on the quick-thinking repartee between these two players. Meyer and Thile have been performing together for the past several years. This performance is their second at Carnegie Hall; they played in Zankel Hall in 2005.
Equally at home in classical music and American music vernaculars, Edgar Meyer has turned the double bass into a modern virtuoso instrument. In 1994, Meyer became the first bassist to win the Avery Fisher Prize. He is also a recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Award and three Grammy Awards. Meyer has continued to wow audiences, from his own double bass concertos that he continues to perform regularly, to recital collaborations with Emanuel Ax and Amy Dorfman and performance and recording projects with artists including Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma, Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain, Mark O’Connor, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Mike Marshall, and many others.
Widely regarded as one of the most inventive musicians of his generation, mandolinist Chris Thile has taken the mandolin from its origins as a folk and bluegrass instrument to one that can be featured in jazz improvisation and classical performance. NPR’s Bob Boilen said of him, “I’ve seen many musicians in my day, but my jaw dropped listening to and watching Thile play. The command he had of his instrument, from frenetically fast strumming to tasty quiet fills, it was just first-rate.” Thile’s newest venture, Punch Brothers, is composed of five young and fiercely talented musicians whose music spans many genres. The band’s Nonesuch debut, Punch, was released in 2007.
