CARNEGIE HALL PRESENTS COUNTRY-FOLK SINGER KATHLEEN EDWARDS AND
ICONIC ROCKER JOHN DOE IN ZANKEL HALL ON
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7 AT 8:30 PM
Singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards brings her blend of country, folk, and pop music to Zankel Hall on Friday, November 7 at 8:30 p.m. Part of the WFUV Live at Zankel series, Edwards is joined by legendary punk musician-turned-roots rocker John Doe. The WFUV Live at Zankel series, which is presented in partnership with WFUV, 90.7 FM, celebrates the art of singer-songwriters and highlights the eclectic nature of modern folk music. WFUV’s Music Director, Rita Houston, curates the series with Carnegie Hall and serves as host for the concerts. Upcoming WFUV Live at Zankel performances include Gary Louris and Mark Olson of The Jayhawks on Saturday, February 7; and the bird and the bee on Saturday, March 7; singer-songwriter Nick Lowe kicks off the series on Friday, October 17.
Drawing comparisons to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, Canadian singer-songwriter, Kathleen Edwards has earned accolades for her blend of country, folk, and pop music. A student of the classical violin, Edwards branched out to the collections of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Tom Petty when living abroad in her early teens. In 1999, she recorded her debut EP, Building 55, which was followed in 2001 by Failer, a mixture of folk and country that led to critical buzz and gigs at South by Southwest. Since embarking on her musical career, Edwards has opened for Willie Nelson, John Prine, Aimee Mann, My Morning Jacket, and John Mayer. Recent releases include the Juno Award-nominated album Back to Me as well as the more recent Asking for Flowers.
A founding member of the Los Angeles punk band X, John Doe is considered an influential figure in American punk and alternative rock scene of the 1980s. After launching his solo career in the 1990s, Doe followed a country rock direction with albums such as Meet John Doe, Freedom Is …, Forever Hasn’t Happened Yet, and A Year in the Wilderness, which features “Golden State,” a duet with Kathleen Edwards.
Carnegie Hall’s WFUV Live at Zankel, which began in October 2005 as City Folk® Live at Zankel, is based on WFUV’s pioneering City Folk® format that blends adult rock, singer-songwriters, and roots music. Artists who have performed as part of the series include Suzanne Vega, Jane Siberry, Rosanne Cash, Marc Cohn, Nellie McKay, Alejandro Escovedo, Cowboy Junkies, Joan Osborne, Dar Williams, and Josh Rouse. WFUV (90.7 FM, wfuv.org) WFUV is a non-commercial, listener-supported public radio station, licensed to Fordham University for 60 years.
