THE NEW YORK POPS CELEBRATES ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY WITH
NEW YORK SONGS: A LOVE LETTER TO THE CITY
ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7 IN STERN AUDITORIUM/PERELMAN STAGE

Vincent Falcone and Eric Stern Conduct the Program, Which Includes the
World Premiere of Original Songs About New York City by Kenneth Laub

On Friday, November 7 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, The New York Pops celebrates its 25th anniversary with New York Songs: A Love Letter to the City, featuring classic songs of New York and the world premiere of original songs about the city by Kenneth Laub. Joining the orchestra is vocalist Clint Holmes, along with Broadway leading ladies Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins), Laura Bell Bundy (Legally Blonde: The Musical), and Linda Hart (Hairspray). Vincent Falcone and Eric Stern conduct the program, which includes songs by Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, Richard Rodgers, Jule Styne, and Cole Porter.

In addition to celebrating the 25th anniversary of the founding of the orchestra by Skitch Henderson, this concert serves as a celebration to the city it has called home and also marks the first time the orchestra has devoted an entire evening to the songs of New York. The program will feature classic New York songs by both native and adopted New Yorkers including: Richard Rodgers, Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, and Leonard Bernstein. On the second half of the program, New York City is celebrated with thirteen new songs by Kenneth Laub. His “Love Letter to the City” captures everything from the mundane to the extraordinary of New York. The New York Pops Chief Executive Officer, James M. Johnson, says of the program, “Ken’s music was selected for this occasion not only because his lyrics bring fresh insight into the goings-on of our town, but because his music swings to the pulse of the city. It grooves and sways in arrangements that belie the notion that orchestras can’t swing.”

The New York Pops was founded by Skitch Henderson in 1983 to give New York a permanent professional symphonic pops orchestra that would create greater public awareness and appreciation of America’s musical heritage. The orchestra is now the largest independent symphonic pops orchestra in the United States with a highly popular subscription series at Carnegie Hall. The orchestra has toured throughout the world, and performs free concerts in New York City parks through its Summermusic program. The New York Pops’ extensive education programs allow thousands of public schoolchildren to participate in numerous concert and music-making experiences. The orchestra’s recordings include a recently reissued CD of the orchestra’s 1983 debut performance as well as a recording of Richard Rodgers’ music with Maureen McGovern. For the fourth year in a row in the summer of 2008, the orchestra performed the musical accompaniment to the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular, telecast nationwide on NBC.
