CARNEGIE HALL ANNOUNCES THE 2009–2010 SEASON OF
WFUV LIVE AT ZANKEL

Shelby Lynne, Richie Havens, and Dan Wilson & Cory Chisel
Perform In Annual Series Presented In Partnership with WFUV, 90.7 FM

Carnegie Hall today announced the lineup for the fifth season of its WFUV Live at Zankel series. This season includes a double bill with singer/songwriter Dan Wilson and Americana-infused folk-rock band, Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons (October 10); country star, Shelby Lynne (December 12); and folk icon, Richie Havens (February 19). The series, presented in partnership with WFUV, 90.7 FM, celebrates the art of singer-songwriters and highlights the eclectic nature of their music. WFUV’s Music Director, Rita Houston, curates the series with Carnegie Hall and serves as host for the concerts.
  • Dan Wilson with Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons, Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 8:30 p.m. — Vocalist and lyricist Dan Wilson is renowned in music circles for his elegant melodies, intelligent lyrics and pure voice. The onetime member of cult band, Trip Shakespeare, and the critically acclaimed group, Semisonic, recently launched his solo career after an intense period of songwriting collaborations with notables such as the Dixie Chicks, Mike Doughty, Jewel, and Jason Mraz among others. His co-writing work with the Dixie Chicks earned him a Song of the Year Grammy in 2007 for “Not Ready To Make Nice” from the album Taking the Long Way for which he co-wrote six songs. Wilson's first full-length solo album, Free Life, was released by American Recordings in 2007.

Performing on a double bill with Wilson is Wisconsin-based singer/songwriter Cory Chisel. Chisel draws inspiration from the music he heard growing up in church as well as from the heartland music of his hometown to create the Americana- and blues-saturated sound that has become his hallmark. On his first full-length album with his band, the Wandering Sons, Chisel showcases his expressive vocals with songs that explore human desire and seek to reconcile the call of the road with a longing for home. The album entitled Death Won’t Send A Letter will be released by RCA in September 2009.

  • Shelby Lynne, Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 8:30 p.m. — By the time country singer Shelby Lynne won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist for her critically-acclaimed album I Am Shelby Lynne in 2001, she already had six albums and over ten years of recording experience. Given that the album was one of the first artistic statements that found her taking more creative control of her music, it was an appropriate award indeed. Lynne’s eclectic musical style incorporates elements of country music, blues, soul, and rock, and has made her a hit among alt-country, rock, and Americana audiences. Since the success of I Am Shelby Lynne, she has released four additional albums including the 2008 Lost Highway release, Just A Little Lovin’, her acclaimed homage to singer Dusty Springfield which was produced by Phil Ramone.

  • Richie Havens, Friday, February 19, 2010 at 8:30 p.m. — Known for his intense rhythmic guitar style, powerful bass-baritone sound, and soulful interpretations of popular and folk music, Richie Havens has been a powerful musical voice since he first emerged on the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 1960’s. Havens gained worldwide recognition after having electrified audiences for three hours performing encore after encore—including a now famous improvised version of “Motherless Child”—as the opening act for the 1969 Woodstock Music & Arts Fair. Throughout his musical career which spans over four decades, Havens has released over 25 albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule that allows him to reach audiences with musical messages of personal freedom and brotherhood. Havens’s most recent studio release, Nobody Left to Crown, was issued by Verve Forecast in 2008. He notes that his albums are, “meant to be a chronological view of the times we’ve come through, what we’ve thought about, and what we’ve done to grow and change.”
Carnegie Hall’s WFUV Live at Zankel, which began in October 2005 as City Folk® Live at Zankel, is based on WFUV’s pioneering City Folk® format which blends adult rock, singer-songwriters, and roots music. Artists who have performed as part of the series include the bird and the bee, Rosanne Cash, Marc Cohn, Cowboy Junkies, Kathleen Edwards and John Doe, Alejandro Escovedo, Nick Lowe, Gary Louris and Mark Olson, Nellie McKay, Joan Osborne, Jane Siberry, and Suzanne Vega.
