On Wednesday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m., vocal quartet Hilliard Ensemble and the Arditti Quartet perform the US premiere of Wolfgang Rihm’s ET LUX, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall.

The Mendelssohn String Quartet, disbanding after 30 years together, makes its final New York appearance on Thursday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m. performing Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor, Bartók’s String Quartet No. 2, and Beethoven’s String Quartet in A Minor.

On Thursday, December 3 at 8:30 p.m., three visionary jazz pianists—Hiromi, Kenny Barron, and Roger Kellaway—pay tribute to the legacy of Oscar Peterson, arguably the most influential jazz pianist of the last 50 years. With a career that spanned over 40 years, Peterson released over 200 records, won seven Grammy Awards, and is noted as a musical influence for countless musicians. For this program, entitled Oscar Peterson Remembered, these three pianists honor Peterson by performing interpretations of his music in their own unique musical voices.

Soprano Dorothea Röschmann performs a recital with pianist Graham Johnson on Saturday, December 5 at 7:30 p.m. with a program of songs from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn as well as selected works by Hugo Wolf and Schumann.

Artistic Director James Levine and The MET Chamber Ensemble perform the first of their two programs this season on Sunday, December 6 at 5:00 p.m. with a variety of works by Pierre Boulez featuring soprano Jo Ellen Miller as well as Mozart’s Divertimento in B-flat Major.

Pianist Peter Serkin performs twice at Carnegie Hall this December, including a solo recital in Zankel Hall on Thursday, December 10 at 7:30 p.m. with works by Chopin, Debussy, Kúrtag, Schoenberg, and Wuorinen. He then returns on Monday, December 28 at 8:00 p.m. as featured soloist with conductor Jaime Laredo and the New York String Orchestra—celebrating its 40th anniversary this year—performing Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor on a program that also includes Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. Laredo and the orchestra also perform their annual Christmas Eve concert on Thursday, December 24 at 7:00 p.m. with a program of Bach’s Concerto for Three Violins featuring Cho-Liang Lin, Kyoko Takezawa, and Bella Hristova; Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro featuring the Orion String Quartet; and Mozart’s Symphony No. 38.

Carnegie Hall presents The Nativity Triptych, a holiday weekend series of three concerts devoted to works from different eras, each inspired by the Nativity story. On Friday, December 11 at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 12 at 8:00 p.m., Music Director Bernard Labadie conducts the chamber orchestra Les Violons du Roy and chorus La Chapelle de Québec in Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, respectively, and on Sunday, December 13 at 8:00 p.m. composer John Adams’s modern nativity story, El Niño, is performed in a concert version by the Orchestra of St. Luke’s conducted by the composer and featuring soprano Dawn Upshaw, mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung, bass-baritone Eric Owens, and countertenors Daniel Bubeck, Brian Cummings, and Steven Rickards, as well as the Westminster Symphonic Choir.

On Friday, December 18 at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 19 at 8:00 p.m., The New York Pops invite audiences to Celebrate the Holidays with Sandi Patty! The program of holiday favorites features Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy Award-winning singer Sandi Patty. The Pops also celebrate the holidays on Saturday, December 19 at 2:00 p.m. performing a concert version of the beloved children’s tale The Polar Express as well as other holiday tunes, in a Family Concert presented by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, with narration by Tony-award nominee John Tartaglia and featuring the Young People’s Chorus of New York City. All three concerts are under the direction of conductor John Morris Russell.
