CARNEGIE HALL JANUARY 2010 HIGHLIGHTS

Artistic Director James Levine and The MET Chamber Ensemble return to Carnegie Hall on Sunday, January 10 at 5:00 p.m. with soprano Judith Bettina, mezzo-soprano Kristin Hoff, and bass-baritone Evan Hughes in a concert featuring works by Roger Sessions, Milton Babbitt, Elliott Carter, and Richard Strauss.

Fortepianist Andreas Staier performs an all-Haydn recital on Wednesday, January 12 at 7:30 p.m. Please note this concert replaces Mr. Staier’s previously announced recital, originally scheduled for Friday, October 16, 2009.

On Thursday, January 14 at 7:30 p.m., French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky makes his New York recital debut with pianist Jérôme Ducros performing works by Dupont, Chausson, Saint-Saëns, Hahn, Massenet, Chaminade, Fauré, Franck, and Lekeu.

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performs three concerts in January, all featuring Daniel Barenboim as either conductor or piano soloist. On Friday, January 15 at 8:00 p.m., Mr. Barenboim conducts Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, Schoenberg’s Variations for Orchestra, and Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde. The final two programs also feature Pierre Boulez: first as conductor on Saturday, January 16 at 8:00 p.m., leading Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony and Piano Concerto with Mr. Barenboim as soloist, as well as works by Webern and Mahler; and second as composer on Sunday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m. when Mr. Barenboim conducts Boulez’s Notations I-IV and VII, along with works by Schoenberg and Beethoven.

Legendary mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne returns to Carnegie Hall from January 19–22 with her acclaimed vocal festival The Song Continues... The event, which features six programs over four days in Weill Recital Hall and Zankel Hall, includes master classes with renowned artists, including Ms. Horne, conductor James Levine, and pianist Warren Jones, and recitals by Marilyn Horne Foundation artists and special guests. This is the seventh season of The Song Continues... at Carnegie Hall, which is presented by The Weill Music Institute in partnership with The Marilyn Horne Foundation.

Ensemble ACJW presents a concert at The Juilliard School’s Paul Hall on Tuesday, January 19 at 8:00 p.m., featuring Robert Schumann’s Märchenerzählungen, Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G Minor, and Brahms’s Serenade No. 1 in D Major.

Violinist Fabio Biondi leads the Italian Baroque orchestra Europa Galante in a performance of works by Telemann, Sammartini, Nardini, Corelli, and Locatelli on Thursday, January 21 at 7:30 p.m. (Mr. Biondi returns to Carnegie Hall on February 1 for a recital with harpsichordist Paola Poncet in Weill Recital Hall.)

The Houston Symphony performs a special program entitled The Planets: An HD Odyssey on Thursday, January 28 at 8:00 p.m. Music Director Hans Graf conducts Holst’s The Planets performed in front of a newly created high-definition film by director Duncan Copp using images from NASA. Also on the program are works by Stravinsky and Dutilleux.

On Friday, January 29 at 7:30 p.m., the American Composers Orchestra returns to Zankel Hall for its “Orchestra Underground” series. Conductor Anne Manson leads a program entitled Conversations, an exploration of the new musical dialogues possible when multimedia and electronics are combined with a live, vibrant orchestra. Works on the program include the New York premiere of Conversations with Cachao by Paquito D’Rivera featuring contra-bass player Robert Black and the composer on clarinet and alto saxophones; the world premiere of Roger Zare’s Time-Lapse; and the world premiere of Sebastian Currier’s Next Atlantis, a multi-media piece inspired by the city of New Orleans with video by artist Pawel Wojtasik.

Pianist Emanuel Ax begins his three-concert celebration of the bicentennial of Chopin’s and Schumann’s births in a recital with cellist Yo-Yo Ma on Friday, January 29 at 8:00 p.m. The program features works by both of these composers as well as the New York premiere of Peter Lieberson’s Remembering Schumann, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall. The other two performances by Mr. Ax include a solo recital on February 10 and with soprano Dawn Upshaw on March 17.

In celebration of Pierre Boulez’s 85th birthday year, the revered composer and conductor leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra—for which he serves as Conductor Emeritus—in two programs at Carnegie Hall. The first, on Saturday, January 30 at 8:00 p.m., features mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung and baritone Falk Struckmann in a concert version of Bartók’s Bluebeard's Castle as well as flutist Mathieu Dufour in Dalbavie’s Flute Concerto. On Sunday, January 31 at 8:00 p.m., pianists Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Tamara Stefanovich are guest soloists in Bartók’s Concerto for Two Pianos, Percussion, and Orchestra, on a program that also includes Stravinsky’s The Firebird (complete) and Boulez’s own Livre pour cordes.
