2012-13 Professional Training Workshops
Audition Requirements
For all workshops, video is strongly preferred. Audio is accepted for all workshops with the exception of conducting applicants for the John Adams and David Robertson Workshop. Each work and movement title should be submitted as a separate file.
Please submit four songs (no arias, musical theater selections, or popular songs):
- • One English song
- • One German song
- • One song in a third language
- • One song in a fourth language
Please submit a short artistic statement in response to the following question:
- • What inspires you as an artist in your professional and personal life?
- • Why is the art of song performance important to you, and what role do you see song recital playing in your future?
- • What aspects of this experience do you think might guide you toward achieving your goals?

Takács Quartet: Haydn, Beethoven, and Bartók String Quartets
Please submit three selections from the following works:
- • One movement of choice from Haydn's String Quartet Op. 77, No. 1, or Op. 77, No. 2
- • One movement of choice from Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 59, No. 2, or Op. 59, No. 3
- • One movement of choice from Bartók's String Quartet No. 4 or No. 6

John Adams and David Robertson: The 21st-Century American Contemporary Ensemble
For Conductors: Please submit the following selections:
- • Two performance (or rehearsal) excerpts of a movement's length or comparable duration, including one post-1945 work
The conductor should be in frontal or partial profile view; at least part of the ensemble should also be in view. Concert performances or rehearsals will be accepted.
For Piano/Keyboard Players: Please submit the following selections:
- • Two pieces of a movement's length or comparable duration, including one 18th- or 19th-century classical work, and one post-1945 work
- • Optional: A chamber music work, preferably written after 1945
For Harpsichordists: Please submit the following selections:
- • Two pieces of a movement's length or comparable duration, including one 17th- or 18th-century classical work, and one post-1945 work
- • Optional: A chamber music work, preferably written after 1945
For Electric Guitar/Banjo/Accordion: Please submit the following selections:
- • A solo work
- • A chamber music/ensemble work
For Percussionists: Please submit the following selections:
- • A solo mallet percussion work
- • A solo multiple percussion work
- • A solo work on an additional instrument of choice
- • Optional: A chamber music work, preferably written after 1945
For Alto or Tenor Saxophonists: Please submit the following selections:
- • Two pieces of a movement's length or comparable duration, including one accompanied 19th- or 20th-century work, and one post-1945 work
- • Excerpt or solo demonstrating ability on secondary instrument (alto/baritone, tenor/soprano)
- • Optional: A chamber music work, preferably written after 1945
For All Other Instrumentalists: Please submit the following selections:
- • Two pieces of a movement's length or comparable duration, including one accompanied 18th- or 19th-century work, and one post-1945 work
- • Excerpt or solo demonstrating ability on auxiliary instrument(s) (Required for flute/piccolo, oboe / English horn, and E-flat/B-flat/bass clarinets. Optional for bass / bass guitar)
- • Optional: A chamber music work, preferably written after 1945
