A revered pianist and composer, Abdullah Ibrahim has been hailed as the greatest exponent of Cape jazz. During his long and glorious career, he has toured the world extensively, performing as soloist with symphony orchestras and with legendary jazz artists such as Max Roach and Randy Weston. Complementing his concert appearance as part of Carnegie Hall’s UBUNTU: Music and Arts of South Africa festival, Mr. Ibrahim offers a master class for solo pianists and small piano ensembles in the Judith and Burton Resnick Education Wing. Invited participants will also have the opportunity to attend Mr. Ibrahim’s Zankel Hall performance on October 17, 2014 at 8:30 PM.

In addition to a completed online form, all applicants must submit a short biography (100-word maximum), a current headshot, a one-page resume, two letters of recommendation, and an audition recording. The audition recording (video is strongly encouraged where possible) should include your unedited performances of the following:
All materials will be submitted electronically through DecisionDesk, a service that provides a digital audition platform to many performing arts schools and programs. As part of the application, you will be asked to enter e-mail addresses for your recommenders—two are required, a third is optional. They will receive a link to an online recommendation form after you submit your completed application. Please note that this e-mail will be sent directly from DecisionDesk (not Carnegie Hall). Your references will have until June 26 to complete and submit their confidential recommendations.
A $10 application fee is required at the time you submit your application.
Invited participants are expected to arrive in New York City the day before the master class begins and depart the day after it concludes. Shared hotel accommodation is provided on that basis. Expenses of up to $350 (domestic) and $650 (international) will be reimbursed to each participant traveling from outside the New York City area.
