One of Beethoven’s most popular pieces, the Op. 13 sonata was subtitled “Pathétique” by its publisher for its explosive and tragic nature. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is a virtuosic musical tableau for piano, depicting everything from the play of newly hatched chicks to the grandeur of Kiev’s great gates.
