Here is a musical menu of substantial American modernism, featuring serious but spirited works from three of our great composers. The Sessions Concertino is like an abstract painting of a party, while Babbitt’s The Head of the Bed is more like a moody portrait of the moon. Carter’s music both demands and repays serious attention. And to conclude, there’s dessert: a delectable, creamy diversion from Richard Strauss, caught in his most light-hearted mood.
