Young Artists participate in mock orchestral auditions led by wind and brass musicians from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and The Philadelphia Orchestra

THE PARTICIPANTS
David Barford (oboe) is a third-year student at Oberlin Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio. He currently studies with Robert Walters and Alex Klein. In the summer of 2008, David attended the Aspen Music Festival and School where he studied with Jeannette Bittar and Elaine Douvas, and worked with conductors such as Peter Oundjian, Lan Shui, and Nicholas McGegan. Originally from Philadelphia, David participated in the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and the Settlement Music School’s chamber music program while in high school.
Alexander Bedenko
Brigette Bencoe (horn) is completing her master’s degree at The Juilliard School as a student of William Purvis. Last season in Avery Fisher Hall, she was principal horn in Strauss’s Don Juan, under the baton of Emmanuel Villaume. Brigette has performed with Jaime Laredo’s New York String Orchestra, and attended the Aspen Music Festival and School and Sarasota Music Festival. She has worked under music directors such as James DuPriest, James Conlon, and David Robertson. Brigett also holds a bachelor’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Luba Benediktovitch (flute) began playing the instrument at the age of seven. She studied in Minsk, Munich, Leipzig, Amsterdam and Banff Center Canada. From 2000 to 2004, Luba played in the orchestra of Bolshoi Theatre in Minsk. She has also been a member of many youth orchestras, including Junger Muenchener Philharmonie with Mark Mast and Sir Colin Davis, World Youth Wind Orchestra with Christian Lindberg and Ole Edward Antonsen, Banff Festival Orchestra with Krzysztof Penderecki, and Opera Studio Orchestra of Bavarian State Opera with Laurent Pillot. She is a first prize–winner of the Eugen Coca and AudiMozart! competitions.
Jason Bergman (trumpet) was recently named Associate Principal trumpet of the Santiago Philharmonic in Santiago, Chile, where he performed during its 2008 season. He also performs as second trumpet of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. A prize winner in the 2007 ITG Orchestral Excerpt Competition, Jason was also a national finalist in the MTNA Young Artist Brass and Chamber music competitions and has been a fellow at the Music Academy of the West. He currently is a doctoral student at the University of Michigan, where he studies with William Campbell, Paul Merkelo, and David Brown.
Michael Gurfield
Adam Havrilla (bassoon) is a graduate of the orchestral performance program at the Manhattan School of Music where he was the recipient of the Stephen Maxym Woodwind Award. He holds a bachelor’s degree in bassoon performance from Carnegie Mellon University. He has studied with both Frank Morelli of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Nancy Goeres, Principal Bassoon of the Pittsburgh Symphony. Adam performs with several New York City ensemble,s including the Aurora Chamber Ensemble, Chelsea Symphony, Distinguished Concerts International, and the Phoenix Ensemble, as well as the Key West Symphony and the New World Symphony. He has performed in such festivals as the National Repertory Orchestra, the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, and Aspen Music Festival, where he was a fellowship member of the American Academy of Conducting Orchestra under Maestro David Zinman.
Jordan Henry (tuba), comes from Angola, Indiana, and has been playing the tuba since age 15. After graduating from Interlochen Arts Academy, Jordan studied with Fritz Kaenzig at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he also earned a minor in comparative literature. Jordan now attends the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he is pursuing his master’s degree under John Stevens. In addition to playing tuba, Jordan spends much of his time composing pop and classical music, reading, and sipping tea outdoors.
Katie Kirkpatrick (horn) grew up in a musical family in Westminster, Maryland, and has been playing horn for 12 years. Katie is currently a senior at Southern Methodist University, where she studies with Gregory Hustis, Principal Horn of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. In the summer of 2008, she participated in the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, Colorado. In her spare time, Katie enjoys yoga and caring for her three Red Ear Slider turtles.
Andrew Parker (oboe) is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater, and Dance. In addition to his experience as a teacher and chamber music coach, Andrew has performed with many orchestras in the US, including the Florida Orchestra, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Flint Symphony, the New Mexico Symphony, the Santa Fe Symphony, the Great Falls Symphony, and the Plymouth Symphony, in which he is currently Principal Oboe. Andrew has also taught at various international music festivals, including the FEMUSC festival in Brazil, Hartwick in New York, and the Kinhaven Music School in Vermont. Andrew received his bachelor’s degree at the Eastman School of Music and his master’s degree at Yale University.
Virya Quesada
Daniel Sebastian (bass trombone) is a graduate of Baylor University. He has performed with the Aegean Verdi Opera Festival in Greece, the National Orchestral Institute in Maryland, and the Aspen Music Festival. Dan has toured with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, and is the bass trombonist for the Waco Symphony Orchestra. As a soloist, Dan has performed with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, the Baylor Trombone Choir, and was a featured soloist at the Del Mar Low Brass Symposium. He has received many honors, and was most recently accepted as the bass trombonist for the International Honors Wind Symphony in New York City to perform in May of 2009 at Avery Fischer Hall.
Elise Shope (flute) is a senior at the University of Michigan, where she studies with Amy Porter. She is an active participant in the University Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Band, and various chamber ensembles. Last season, Elise twice performed as a substitute member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She won second place in the National Flute Association Orchestra Masterclass Competition and the Mid-South Flute Festival Young Artist Competition. Elise has been a fellowship student at the Aspen Music Festival and School for two consecutive summers, where she studied with Nadine Asin.
Monika Warchol (horn) is currently completing graduate work at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she studies with Jonathan Ring. An active freelancer, Monika has performed with many Bay Area orchestras, including the San Francisco Symphony. This spring, she will premiere a horn concerto by conservatory faculty member David Garner. In past summers, Monika has attended the Aspen Music Festival, Eastern Music Festival, Junges Klangforum, and International Lyric Academy in Rome. Her former teachers include Roland Pandolfi, John Zirbel, and Robert Ward. A native of Savannah, Georgia, Monika received her bachelor’s degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
Nicholas Wolny (horn) is a senior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was a winner of the 2008 Yamaha Young Performing Artist Competition and has attended the Sarasota and Kent/Blossom music festivals. Nick is currently a candidate for a 2009 J. William Fulbright Grant to study at the Norges Musikkhøgskole in Oslo, Norway. In his spare time, Nick also enjoys distance running, cooking, and yoga.
