Shelby Lynne
Shelby Lynne makes timeless American music, pure and simple. Born in Quantico, Virginia, she grew up in Jackson, Alabama, and headed to Nashville at an early age. At 18, Ms. Lynne’s demos landed her an appearance on TNN’s Nashville Now series. This led to a record deal and a Top-50 duet—“If I Could Bottle This Up”—with George Jones in 1988.
After a series of contemporary country albums and one Western swing–big band jazz album, she traded Nashville for California, recording her critically acclaimed breakthrough album I Am Shelby Lynne with producer Bill Bottrell in 2000. The following year, Ms. Lynne won the Grammy for Best New Artist and released Love, Shelby, which was produced by Glen Ballard.
Identity Crisis (2003) and Suit Yourself (2005), both released by Capitol Records, were intimate, unguarded works that reaffirmed her position as a visionary iconoclastic artist who deftly weaves country, soul, rock, blues, pop, and folk influences to forge her own unique style. Just a Little Lovin’ followed in 2008 on Lost Highway Records. Produced by Phil Ramone, the album featured Ms. Lynne’s interpretations of nine songs popularized by one of her greatest influences, Dusty Springfield, and one new original song.
Ms. Lynne, who made her acting debut playing Johnny Cash’s mother in the 2005 Fox Searchlight motion picture Walk the Line, recently appeared in an episode of Army Wives. The Lifetime series also featured two of her compositions. One of the songs, “Like A Fool,” will be included on her upcoming studio album, set for release in 2010.
