Musical Explorers (Grades 1 and 2)
My City, My Song

2009–2010 Season Information

Through this yearlong program, more than 4,000 students in grades 1 and 2 will explore vocal study, and discover the diverse cultures and neighborhoods of New York City. Students learn and sing songs from different cultures, languages, and traditions; develop age-appropriate musical skills and an understanding of basic music fundamentals; and make meaningful connections with their communities.

Program Features
  • Two interactive concerts (fall and spring) per year in Zankel Hall, featuring multicultural and Western vocalists
  • Yearlong curriculum guide with CDs for teachers and student companion workbooks
  • Two Professional Development Workshops (fall and spring) required per year. Full details here ›

Through skills-based activities, listening, and creative work from the comprehensive Musical Explorers curriculum, children are introduced to local musicians, their musical lives, and their favorite vocal repertoire. Classroom learning expands exponentially in each semester's interactive culminating concerts in Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall. Students experience the artists and music they have encountered in the curriculum, and perform selections they have learned with the artists. At the end of each concert, the performers of the three genres of music studied that semester unite to perform a single work, musically illustrating how people in different communities and from different backgrounds can work in harmony with each other.

Students meet vocal artists who perform music from China, Cuba, Sephardic and American folk song, and Western musical theater and jazz traditions, and neighborhoods from across New York City. The program includes a comprehensive curriculum and accompanying audio resources for teachers.

Join us as we explore the voice—the instrument we are born with—and discover the diverse heritage of song and musical tradition in New York City.
