FADO SENSATION MARIZA OPENS CARNEGIE HALL’S
AROUND THE GLOBE SERIES ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12

Vocal sensation Mariza opens Carnegie Hall’s Around the Globe series on Friday, October 12 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. Mariza brings her unique interpretation of fado back to Carnegie Hall following her sold-out debut in 2005.

Mariza’s first album, Fado Em Mim, was released in 2001 and quickly went triple platinum in Portugal. Shortly thereafter her fame spread well past fado’s traditional home in Portugal, and in 2002 she was asked to perform in New York’s Central Park, the Hollywood Bowl, London’s Purcell Room, and at the WOMAD Festival. BBC Radio 3 named Mariza “Best European World Music Artist of 2003,” and Fado Curvo, her second album, reached number six on Billboard’s World Music chart, garnering the Deutsche Schalplatten Kritik Award from German critics. Her third album, Transparente, was released to critical acclaim in more than 35 countries. Mariza followed this success with her latest release Concerto em Lisboa, a live DVD and CD, which captured the vocalist in performance with the Orchestra Sinfonieta de Lisboa, conducted by Jaques Morelenbaum.

Well known for her energetic live performances, Mariza has maintained an extensive touring schedule over the past several years, appearing at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican in London, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, Théâtre de La Ville in Paris, the Albeniz Theatre in Madrid, Teatro Grec in Barcelona, and the Sydney Opera House. Mariza also performed as part of the opening season of the Walt Disney Concert Hall with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Recent honors and awards include the International Career Prize by the Amália Rodrigues Foundation and the prestigious Comenda da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique, which distinguishes people who have contributed to the expansion of Portugal’s culture and history around the world. Mariza also stars in the forthcoming film Fado by Carlos Saura—whose past works include the Oscar-nominated Tango and Flamenco—giving fans a chance to see her in an acting role. This film will be shown in North America at the New York Film Festival.
