IN RECITAL WITH PIANIST WARREN JONES ON OCTOBER 11 AT 8:00 P.M.

Performance Marks Sole Recital Appearance
for Te Kawana and von Stade in New York City during the 2007–2008 Season

Carnegie Hall presents soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa in recital with pianist Warren Jones on Thursday, October 11 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. The program includes works by Mozart, Strauss, Duparc, Poulenc, Heggie, Britten, Copland, Wolf-Ferrari, and Puccini (detailed program information is listed below). Dame Kiri is joined by special guest mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade for a series of duets that will be announced the evening of the performance from the stage. This performance is the sole recital appearance that both singers will make in New York City during the 2007–2008 season. This season also marks Dame Kiri’s US Farewell Tour.

Soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa made her operatic debut as the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Royal Opera House in 1971 and since then has moved into the front rank of the international opera scene. Born in New Zealand and a descendant of the Maori aristocracy, Dame Kiri studied at the London Opera Centre. She has performed in the leading opera houses of the world, including Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera, Paris Opera, the Sydney Opera House, the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, San Francisco, Munich and Cologne Opera. Her lyric soprano heroine roles include those by Richard and Johann Strauss, Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Tchaikovsky, as well as Bizet and Gounod. On the concert stage, she has collaborated with the many of the world's leading orchestras including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Dame Kiri has worked with many noted conductors including Claudio Abbado, Sir Colin Davis, Charles Dutoit, James Levine, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, and Sir Georg Solti.

As a soloist, she performed at the wedding of HRH The Prince of Wales in St Paul's Cathedral at which she sang for one of the largest direct telecast audience of any singer in history (estimated to be over 600 million people). Dame Kiri was named a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1982 and has received honorary degrees from universities in Cambridge, Oxford, Auckland, and Chicago, among others. In 2006, Dame Kiri released a new album with the EMI label in collaboration with composer Karl Jenkins, entitled Kiri Sings Karl.

Widely known by her nickname "Flicka”, mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade’s career has taken her to the world's great opera houses and concert halls. Ms. von Stade has appeared with many leading opera companies including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Los Angeles Opera, the Teatro alla Scala, the Royal Opera Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera, and the Paris Opera. She has also collaborated with many fine conductors including James Levine, Kurt Masur, Riccardo Muti, Leonard Slatkin, and Michael Tilson Thomas. Ms. von Stade has made over seventy recordings and has six Grammy Award nominations to her credit. Frederica von Stade has been awarded honorary doctorates from multiple institutions, including Yale University, Boston University, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and, her alma mater, the Mannes School of Music. In 1998, Ms. von Stade was awarded France's highest honor in the Arts when she was appointed as an officer of L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and, in 1983, she was honored with an award given at The White House by President Reagan in recognition of her significant contribution to the arts.

Pianist Warren Jones frequently performs with many of today's best-known artists including Barbara Bonney, Ruth Ann Swenson, Denyce Graves, Stephanie Blythe, Håkan Hagegård, Bo Skovhus, Samuel Ramey, James Morris, and Joseph Alessi. In the past, he has partnered with such great singers as Marilyn Horne, Kathleen Battle, Carol Vaness, Tatiana Troyanos, and Martti Talvela. Internationally, he has performed at the Salzburg Festival, the Teatro alla Scala, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Opéra Bastille, Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Konzerthaus Berlin, and Suntory Hall. Mr. Jones has been invited three times to the White House to perform at concerts honoring heads of state. He has several recordings to his credit on the BMG/RCA Red Seal and has been nominated for a Grammy Award on this label as well as Decca's Argo label. Mr. Jones is a member of the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music and teaches and performs at the Music Academy of the West. Born in Washington, D.C., he grew up in North Carolina and graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he was honored with the Conservatory's Outstanding Alumni Award.

In addition, for all Carnegie Hall Corporation presentations taking place in Stern Auditorium, a limited number of partial-view seats, priced at $10, will be available beginning at noon on the day of the concert. The exceptions are Carnegie Hall Family Concerts and gala events. These $10 tickets are available to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis at the Carnegie Hall Box Office only. There is a two-ticket limit per customer.

A limited number of student/senior citizen discount tickets, priced at $10, may also be available for some Carnegie Hall events. They are on sale at the Box Office beginning at noon until 1 hour before concert time. Student/senior discount tickets for some Weill Recital Hall events are available at the Box Office one hour before the performance. Please call CarnegieCharge for ticket availability.
