—THE ACADEMY—
A Program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute
In Partnership with the New York City Department of Education

New Program for Top Post-Graduate Musicians Doubles in Size:
34 Musician Fellows to Serve New York City Public Schools in
All Five Boroughs Starting This Fall

Ensemble ACJW Performs 19 Concerts Throughout the Season
at Carnegie Hall and Juilliard

Partnership with Skidmore College
Broadens Reach of The Academy Beyond New York City
This fall, The Academy—an innovative two-year fellowship program providing extensive performance opportunities and intensive music education training for the finest post-graduate musicians—will enter its second phase (September 2007 to June 2008) and more than double in size to include 34 fellows. Established in January 2007, The Academy, a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute, in partnership with the New York City Department of Education, reflects the shared belief among its founders that the artist of tomorrow will require both the highest performance standards and the capacity to give back to the community, inspiring new generations of musicians and music lovers.

This season, the fellows will continue to make a major contribution to New York City public schools’ music education programs, working alongside teachers in all five boroughs. In October, after receiving intensive instruction in educational techniques, fellows will go into the New York City public schools, working with students in classrooms for one-and-a-half days per week for 24 weeks of the year. Beginning October 10, the fellows of The Academy will also come together as Ensemble ACJW to perform throughout the season in 19 concerts at Carnegie Hall and Juilliard with programs ranging from Bach to Bright Sheng, Mozart and Mendelssohn to John Cage, Steve Reich, and Osvaldo Golijov. (A complete performance schedule follows.)

The Academy will also broaden its reach beyond New York City with two four-day residencies at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. From October 3–6 and again February 13–16, fellows will perform in concert at Skidmore’s Filene Recital Hall as well as interact with Skidmore students and members of the local community. The residencies will feature performances of programs also to be offered at Carnegie Hall and will include encore presentations of new works that Carnegie Hall commissioned for its 2006–2007 season.

“We could not be prouder of the achievements of our Academy fellows and we are pleased to be able to significantly expand the reach of the program this fall,” said Clive Gillinson, Executive and Artistic Director of Carnegie Hall. “I truly believe that we have created a win-win-win situation with The Academy: the fellows gain exciting new opportunities for both performance and outreach; students benefit from having extraordinary musicians in their midst; and teachers gain new resources in their classrooms. We’re grateful to have found such committed partners in The Juilliard School, our team at The Weill Music Institute, and the New York City Department of Education as well as remarkable donors, who have such strong belief in this new initiative.”

"As we begin the first full year of Academy activities, it is very gratifying to see our fellows reach out to the New York City community through their artistry and their dedication to education through the arts,” said Joseph W. Polisi, President of The Juilliard School. “The arts are about creativity, imagination, and humanity. The Academy fellows embody these virtues and many more, and I am very proud of all they have already achieved and will achieve in the time ahead."

“Every student should have a comprehensive arts education,” said Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein. “New York City students live in one of the world’s great arts cities, and partnerships like this one ensure that City students obtain the world-class arts education they deserve. We thank Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute for working to enrich the education and the lives of New York’s students and schools."

Looking ahead, future planning for The Academy will focus on forging lasting connections between Academy alumni and their partner schools, as well as continuing to expand the program’s involvement with other communities through the establishment of new residencies.

Fellows of the Academy are graduates of leading music schools including: The Curtis Institute of Music, Eastman School of Music, The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College The New School for Music, New England Conservatory, San Francisco Conservatory, Stony Brook University, and Yale School of Music. The deadline for applications for 2008–2009 is December 1, 2007; please visit acjw.org for more information.

The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education is a two-year fellowship designed for post-graduate musicians embarking on their careers, offering extensive performance opportunities and intensive training in the area of music education. The program provides performance opportunities through Ensemble ACJW at both Carnegie Hall and The Juilliard School; advanced musical training, including coaching sessions with top musicians and individual private lessons; and intensive teaching instruction leading to hands-on experience working with students in the New York City public school system. Fellows work in partnership with a specific music teacher with a variety of grade levels in areas such as instrumental teaching, creative learning projects, general music knowledge, and lecture-demonstrations, depending on the specific needs of each school. A partnership with Skidmore College will also bring performances and educational events to the Saratoga Springs community beginning in 2007–2008.

The Academy was established in January 2007. The program was initiated by Carnegie Hall’s Executive and Artistic Director Clive Gillinson in partnership with Joseph Polisi, President of The Juilliard School. The program reflects their shared belief that the artist of tomorrow will require both the ability to perform at the highest level and the capacity to give back to the community, inspiring the next generation of musicians and music lovers. The first pilot phase of The Academy ran from January through June 2007 with 16 fellows selected from recent graduates of The Juilliard School and participants in The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall’s Professional Training Workshops. Starting in September 2007, 19 new musician fellows join 15 returning fellows for the second phase of the pilot, which runs through June 2008. The new fellows were nominated by music school deans and leading musicians, and then selected by live audition.

The Academy—A Program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute is supported, in part, by leadership gifts from Mercedes and Sid Bass, The Kovner Foundation, Martha and Bob Lipp, Judith and Burton Resnick, Susan and Elihu Rose, The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation, and the New York City Department of Education. Additional support is provided by The Dana Foundation, the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation, and The William Petschek Family.

About the Partners:

Carnegie Hall features the world’s greatest soloists, ensembles, and orchestras in its renowned Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, intimate Weill Recital Hall, and technologically advanced Zankel Hall. The legendary concert venue presents over 200 events each year and produces such acclaimed series as Perspectives, Making Music, and Distinctive Debuts. The recent establishment of The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall paves the way for expanded opportunities as Carnegie Hall moves forward as an international cultural center representing the very best in musical performance and arts education.

The Juilliard School has set this country's standard for education in the performing arts since its 1905 founding. In 1968, Juilliard became an original—and the only academic—constituent of Lincoln Center. Its music programs were joined by a Dance Division (est. 1951) and Drama Division (est. 1968). In 2001, Juilliard broke new ground by adding a jazz curriculum, including bachelor and master of music programs, as well as the pre-professional Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies, a collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center. Juilliard represents the finest in performing arts education, growing with and responding to the needs of a thriving cultural community in the US and abroad, its student body drawn from 48 states (including Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia) and 48 foreign countries, its alumni among the best known and respected artists worldwide. The School’s current renovation is adding 39,000 square feet including new state-of-the-art spaces—studios, classrooms, rehearsal halls, centers for music technology and writing/communication, a theater, and a secure facility for storage and use of the priceless Juilliard Manuscript Collection. During renovation, Juilliard is presenting a full schedule of more than 700 annual dance, drama, and music performances while supporting expanded student and alumni services, curriculum, outreach programs, and long-range planning via an ongoing campaign for its $300 million Second Century Fund.

The Weill Music Institute creates broad-reaching music education programs, playing a central role in Carnegie Hall’s commitment to making great music accessible to as many people as possible through creative musical interaction and inspiring lifelong learning. Educational programs are woven into the fabric of the Carnegie Hall concert season, with opportunities for preschoolers to adults, new listeners to emerging professional musicians. With its access to the world’s greatest artists and latest technologies, The Weill Music Institute is uniquely positioned to inspire the next generation of music lovers, nurture tomorrow’s musical talent, and shape the evolution of music education itself. The Weill Music Institute annually serves over 115,000 children, students, teachers, parents, young music professionals, and adults in the New York City metropolitan area, across the United States, and around the world.

New York City Department of Education
The New York City Department of Education provides instruction to all students, from pre-kindergarten through grade 12—instruction that meets their needs and that helps them grow each day and each year. The New York City public school system is the largest in the nation and has the responsibility to develop, support, and sustain over 1,400 great schools to give every student the opportunity to succeed.

About Skidmore College:

Founded in 1903, Skidmore College is a nationally recognized, coeducational, liberal arts college of 2,400 students. This fall, the college begins construction on the 51,000-square-foot Arthur Zankel Music Center, named for the late New York financier. A generous leader of initiatives at Skidmore and at Carnegie Hall, Arthur Zankel’s legacy is a productive partnership that unites both organizations with other important collaborators to provide dynamic music programming throughout New York State.
