SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK CELEBRATES AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE AND
SINGING TRADITIONS AT CARNEGIE HALL ON
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29 AT 8:00 P.M.

Ensemble Returns to Carnegie Hall in January 2008
for a Carnegie Hall Family Concert Geared Toward Children Ages 5–12
Renowned a cappella sextet Sweet Honey In The Rock performs in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage on Thursday, November 29 at 8:00 p.m. Rooted in a commitment to create music out of the textures of African American traditions, Sweet Honey In The Rock’s music captures the sounds of blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, hip hop, ancient lullabies, and jazz improvisation.

Founded in 1973 by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, Louise Robinson, Carol Maillard, and Mie Fredericks at the D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company, Sweet Honey In The Rock has become a significant presence in the music culture of Washington, D.C., the folk/gospel music scene, and through political activism around the world. The group has toured much of the globe, performed at major political rallies and events, and been featured on Grammy Award-winning recordings as well as in documentaries and books. More than 20 members have passed through Sweet Honey’s ranks over the past 34 years; the current line-up features vocalists/hand percussionists Aisha Kahlil, Carol Maillard, Louise Robinson, Ysaye Maria Barnwell, Nitanju Bolade Casel, and sign-language interpreter Shirley Childress Saxton. Dr. Reagon retired from the ensemble in 2004.

Now in its 34th season, Sweet Honey In The Rock released its latest CD, Experience…101, on the Appleseed label. The album’s 18 tracks are responses to questions posed by children ages nine through twelve about the adult world, with topics including the importance of education, the importance of global awareness, and of listening to the wisdom of elders.

Sweet Honey In The Rock will return to Carnegie Hall for a Family Concert on January 20, 2008. Featuring music for the entire family, these one-hour, weekend afternoon concerts are designed for children ages 5-12 to experience the joy of attending a live musical performance. Fun and engaging pre-concert activities allow children to meet artists one-on-one for an up-close look at the instruments they play. All tickets are affordably priced at $9.
