CARNEGIE HALL ANNOUNCES TARGET AS 2009 SPONSOR OF
FREE NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERT SERIES

Target’s Vision of Supporting Accessible Arts for All Helps to Bring
Free Neighborhood Concerts to Venues Throughout New York City

Carnegie Hall is pleased to announce that Target will be the 2009 sponsor of its free Neighborhood Concert Series, presented by The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall.

For more than 33 years, the Neighborhood Concert Series has supported Carnegie Hall’s mission of making great music accessible to as many people as possible by offering performances free-of-charge to audiences in community venues in all five boroughs of New York City. More than 45 concerts will be presented throughout the 2008–2009 season, reflecting both the diverse sounds of the city and Carnegie Hall’s ever-expanding programming, including artists performing classical, jazz, Latin, tango, klezmer, Gospel, folk, contemporary, world music, and more. During the 2008–2009 season, the Neighborhood Concert Series continues to gain recognition throughout New York City and has seen a rise in attendance at its concerts. All Neighborhood Concert Series concerts are free and open to the public with many performances appropriate for family audiences.

“We are delighted that Target has agreed to become our partner, providing important support to one of our most treasured community programs, the Neighborhood Concert Series,” said Clive Gillinson, Executive and Artistic Director of Carnegie Hall. “With Target’s involvement, Carnegie Hall is able to advance its work, ensuring that great music can be an everyday, inspirational part of people’s lives. In these challenging times, more than ever, we applaud their commitment to making music and art accessible to all, a focus that undoubtedly enriches the cultural offerings in our community.”

“At Target, our local grants are making a difference in the communities we serve,” said Laysha Ward, vice president, community relations, Target. “We’re proud to partner with Carnegie Hall as part of our ongoing commitment to give back to the communities where our guests and team members live and work.”

Since the opening of its doors in 1962, Target has dedicated five percent of its income (today translating to $3 million every week) to partnering with organizations to make positive changes in the community through education, the arts, and safe families and communities. Target’s commitment to making arts and cultural experiences more affordable and accessible for families mirrors the goal of Carnegie Hall’s concert series creating an ideal partnership.

From April to June 2009, more than 15 free performances will be presented around New York City as part of the Neighborhood Concert Series including fun-for-all ages group The Wiyos on Saturday, April 18 at 3:00 p.m., tango and jazz fusion ensemble Avantango on Saturday, May 30 at 2:00 p.m., the 12-piece ensemble Folklore Urbano on Sunday, June 21 at 2:00 p.m., and the Latin jazz group Chris Washburne and the S.Y.O.T.O.S. Band on Sunday, June 28 at 2:00 p.m.

Jay Kaplan, Director of Programs & Exhibitions at Brooklyn Central Library, a venue partner of the Neighborhood Concert Series, said "Carnegie Hall’s continual contributions to our community have certainly moved us closer to fulfilling our mission of connecting people from all walks of life with ideas and contemporary cultural currents; stimulating and nourishing minds, while delighting and refreshing imaginations.”
