Performances at Carnegie Hall and Elsewhere

The Academy—a pioneering two-year leadership program for post-graduate musicians from leading music schools that provides performance opportunities, year-long school partnerships with the New York City public schools, and intensive professional development—begins its fourth season this fall. Established in January 2007, The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education—equips musicians with the skills and values necessary for careers that combine musical excellence with education, community engagement, and advocacy.

As the acclaimed Ensemble ACJW, the Academy’s 20 fellows will come together to perform 23 concerts this season at Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and other venues. New this season will be a series of three concerts at Greenwich Village nightclub and music venue (Le) Poisson Rouge, with programs created entirely by the fellows. Also, for the third consecutive season, The Academy will partner with Skidmore College, bringing performances and educational events, including student composer readings, to the Saratoga Springs community. Alumni of the program maintain close ties with the program by returning to perform as part of the Ensemble in a variety of concerts presented by Carnegie Hall and by other venues in New York City and beyond.

Throughout the school year, fellows of The Academy will continue to have a major impact in the New York City public schools, working alongside a partner music teacher and adapting their teaching to the needs of the school to which they will be assigned to work throughout the year. Following much success during its initial year last season, each fellow will also develop and perform in two interactive ensemble concerts with Academy colleagues in each of their schools, bringing their talented musicianship not just to student musicians, but also to a wider school audience.

The Academy, 2009–2010 Season
Performances: During the 2009—2010 season, Ensemble ACJW will perform 23 concerts at an expanded number of venues, including Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall and Weill Recital Hall; The Juilliard School’s Paul Hall; (Le) Poisson Rouge in Greenwich Village; in New York City community venues as part of the free Neighborhood Concert Series presented by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute; Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center; and at Skidmore College’s Filene Recital Hall and Ladd Concert Hall.

Time Out New York
wrote that Ensemble ACJW’s concerts “are quite possibly the most unheralded bargains in town—adventurous programs covering everything from the Baroque to contemporary music, played with heart and precision.”

2009–2010 season highlights include:
Note: A complete Ensemble ACJW performance schedule follows at the end of this release.

School Partnerships: Following intensive instruction in music educational concepts, each fellow—matched with a New York City public school—brings his/her musical knowledge and talents into a K-12 classroom beginning in October. Depending on the needs of each school, fellows can provide one-on-one or sectional coaching to young instrumental students, teach general music, coach band or string ensembles, or serve as a musical resource at their school. Using a co-teaching model, the residency focuses on musical skill-building with the students through interactive performances and creative approaches to skills-based work. Following a successful launch of a new initiative last year, small groups of fellows will develop and perform in two interactive performances at their schools, bringing music to the larger student body. Each fellow is on-site at his/her partner school for 36 days of the school year.

In connection with having an Academy fellow in its music classrooms, Academy partner schools receive a number of additional benefits, including “materials allowances” to be used in support of its music program; access to the programs of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, including free enrollment in its LinkUP! Program for select classrooms; professional development opportunities for teachers and principals; free concert tickets to select Carnegie Hall Family Concerts and Ensemble ACJW concerts; school group tours of Carnegie Hall and The Juilliard School; and ongoing consultation with Academy staff. Public elementary, middle, and high schools that are within the New York City Department of Education and that have already-existing music programs are eligible to apply for this program. Schools selected for participation in this program will be asked to set aside $1,500 for the partnership school benefits and services provided by The Academy fellow.

Skidmore College Residency: On October 7-10, 2009 and February 3-6, 2010, Academy fellows head north to Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, for a third straight season of mini-residencies at the school. Through formal concerts on campus and informal performances in other non-traditional settings like dormitories, Ensemble ACJW continues to strengthen its relationship with audiences outside of New York City. On February 5, 2010, Ensemble ACJW is slated to play the first public concert in Ladd Concert Hall in the spectacular new Zankel Music Center. Fellows will also work with Skidmore College music students in master classes and lessons, composition reading sessions with student composers, and community outreach to schools in the surrounding community.

(Le) Poisson Rouge Series: A new series of concerts this season will be programmed and performed by Ensemble ACJW at the Greenwich Village’s (Le) Poisson Rouge. More details are to be announced.

Group Projects: Academy musicians are given the opportunity to propose ideas for group projects that fulfill the mission of the program. Using music as a central theme, these projects give selected fellows real-life experience working as a group with major arts organizations to produce an engaging and interactive event for students or for different New York City communities. Fellows with approved proposals are given access to the resources of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, The Weill Music Institute, and the New York City Department of Education to create, develop, and implement their own community or school-based project. Examples of previous second year projects include:

Last season, two groups of fellows created projects. The M.U.S.I.C. Exchange (Musically Uniting Students in Correspondence) ran from November 2008 through March 2009 creating a musical and written conversation across cultures and generations through an exchange of musical ideas and letters. Participants included students from PS 153M and Long Island City High School; 10 refugee high school students participating in the International Rescue Committee youth program; and members of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas (POA). The second project, Voice of the Whale, was an hour-long multimedia performance inspired by George Crumb's Vox Balaenae and featured works, including the world première of Middle Bank Rounds by the American composer Ingram Marshall. The event took place on May 17, 2009 at The American Museum of Natural History's Milstein Hall of Ocean Life.

Alumni: The Academy maintains a close relationship with its alumni by offering them opportunities to perform as part of Ensemble ACJW at Carnegie Hall and for a variety of audiences in New York City and beyond. This season, alumni are given the opportunity to co-lead many of the professional development sessions for the current fellows, especially those that focus on the in-school work and how to co-teach with partner teachers. Alumni will also be featured in a spring Carnegie Hall Family Concert on Sunday, June 5 at 1:00 p.m. and in Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concerts. (See below for more details)

The Academy
The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education—is a two-year leadership program designed to develop the skills and values necessary for careers that combine musical excellence with education, community engagement, and advocacy. The program serves postgraduate musicians with opportunities to perform in concert halls, to teach in public schools, to engage in local communities and college campuses, and to support this work through professional development. The program reflects the belief that the artist of tomorrow will require both the ability to perform at the highest level and the capacity to give back to the community, inspiring the next generation of musicians and music lovers. A partnership with Skidmore College that began in the 2007–08 season will also bring performances and educational events to the Saratoga Springs community.

The Academy was launched in January 2007, initiated by Carnegie Hall’s Executive and Artistic Director Clive Gillinson in partnership with Joseph W. Polisi, President of The Juilliard School. The fellows in the program were selected because of their extraordinary level of musicianship, deep commitment to education and community engagement, and leadership qualities. Fellows are graduates of leading music schools, including The Curtis Institute of Music, Eastman School of Music, The Juilliard School, Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, Mannes College The New School for Music, New England Conservatory, and Yale School of Music. Please visit acjw.org for more information about the program.
