CAPE VERDEAN SINGER SARA TAVARES PERFORMS A BLEND OF AFRICAN
AND PORTUGUESE MUSIC IN ZANKEL HALL ON NOVEMBER 13 AT 8:30 PM

Singer, guitarist, and composer Sara Tavares performs an eclectic evening of music reflecting a mixture of contemporary pop with influences of her Cape Verdean heritage and Portuguese upbringing in Zankel Hall on Friday, November 13 at 8:30 p.m. Tavares is recognized for being on the forefront of a young generation of African musicians performing in Europe. This concert is presented in partnership with the World Music Institute.

Identity and multiculturalism play a significant role in Sara Tavares’ life and music. Born to second-generation Cape Verdean immigrants, Tavares grew up between two cultures after her parents migrated from Senegal to Portugal in search of a better life. It was through music that she began to seek out her cultural roots in Cape Verde where she continues to return each year. As a teenager, Tavares won two of Portugal’s most prestigious TV music contests—the Endemol song contest and the Eurovision Song Contest—and began singing and composing gospel, funk, and soul music before deciding to incorporate the influences of her African and Portuguese background.

Tavares incorporates multilingual wordplay in her performances which includes elements of African rhythm, pop, and reggae, and manages to transcend language barriers to connect with audiences all over the world. Her new album Xinti was released by Four Quarter Entertainment in August 2009.

The World Music Institute is dedicated to the study and presentation of the finest traditional and contemporary music and dance from around the world. Growing out of a concert program developed at New York’s Alternative Museum begun in 1976, the World Music Institute has presented music from more than 100 countries in regions throughout the world.
