Fall 2009/Winter 2010 programs include two Carnegie Hall Family Concerts, recommended for children ages 5–12, with all tickets priced at $9; free Neighborhood Concerts in all five boroughs, including several specifically geared towards audiences of all ages; and The McGraw Hill Companies CarnegieKids, an introductory music program for Pre-K and Kindergarten students that encourages sound exploration and active music making, led this year by the zany musical duo Polygraph Lounge.

Committed to making great music accessible, The Weill Music Institute creates broad-reaching music education and community programs that play a central role in Carnegie Hall’s season. WMI provides musical opportunities for everyone, from preschoolers to adults, new listeners to emerging professionals. For a full list of WMI programs, click here.

Fall 2009/Winter 2010 Events for Families Include:

A Carnegie Hall Family Concert in Zankel Hall on Sunday, November 15 at 1:00 p.m. by Falu—an Indian vocalist that specializes in a hybrid music called “Indie Hindi!” Joining Falu for this concert is Falguni Shah (Vocalist), Gaurav Shah (Bansuri, Harmonium, and Vocals), Soumya Chatterjee (Violin), Aditya Kalyanpur (Tabla), and Mark Tewarson (Guitar) with a special appearance by the Blues Traveler’s front man and harmonica virtuoso John Popper. Each Carnegie Hall Family Concert asks children a “big musical question,” and, in this performance, Falu and her band will help the audience answer “How does classical Indian music tell time?” Tickets for Carnegie Hall Family Concerts, all priced at $9, also include a pre-concert activity beginning one hour prior to the concert.

On Saturday, November 21 at 3:00 p.m. guitarist and folk singer-songwriter Joe Jencks performs a free Neighborhood Concert at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College. Based in Seattle, Washington, Mr. Jencks’ songs weave together a diverse web of stories with brilliant musical skill, ensnaring even the most rigid of hearts. His latest album, Links in a Chain, combines original songs and classic folk repertoire paying tribute to significant influences during his life. (Mr. Jencks also performs this season on the artist roster of WMI’s Musical Explorers program for first and second graders.)

On Sunday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m. Polygraph Lounge, the zany multi-instrumentalist duo of Rob Schwimmer and Mark Stewart, performs a free Neighborhood Concert at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College. Conceived in New York City's Lower East Side, Polygraph Lounge specializes in musical hilarity/anarchy in the Spike Jones tradition. The duo performs in many other WMI programs this season, including CarnegieKids for Pre-K and Kindergarten, in professional development sessions with WMI’s Teaching Artist Collaborative, and in a Carnegie Hall Family Concert on May 15, 2010.

WMI presents its first free “Community Sing” event of the season on Saturday, December 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Harlem’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Led by Chantel Renee Wright, Songs of Solomon, a Harlem-based performing company and preparatory program, performs and leads the audience in spirituals and basic choral exercises. No experience is necessary and all ages and levels are welcome! Additional “Community Sing” events in Harlem and the Bronx are to be announced. For additional Neighborhood Concerts and “Community Sing” updates throughout the season, visit www.carnegiehall.org/communityprograms.

On Saturday, December 19 at 2:00 p.m. The New York Pops performs a concert version of the beloved holiday children’s tale The Polar Express and other holiday favorites in a Carnegie Hall Family Concert. Actor John Tartaglia narrates and John Morris Russell leads The New York Pops and Young People’s Chorus of New York City, under the direction of Artistic Director Francisco J. Núñez, in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. Based on the story by Chris Van Allsburg, The Polar Express depicts the story of a young boy who embarks on a journey of self-discovery when he boards a powerful magical train headed to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. The performance features images from Allsburg’s 1986 Caldecott Medal winning children’s book while the score by Alan Silvestri includes the new holiday classic “Believe” from the 2004 feature film. Tickets are only $9 each. Charlotte Blake Alston—storyteller, narrator, and singer—performs during the pre-concert activity beginning one hour prior to the concert in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. Recommended for children ages 5–12. Family Concerts coming in spring 2010 include performances by Time for Three, Polygraph Lounge, and Ensemble ACJW. For a full schedule, visit www.carnegiehall.org/familyconcerts.

The McGraw Hill Companies CarnegieKids, WMI’s program for pre-K and Kindergarten age children, returns this season on January 27, 28, and 30 with two performances each day at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in its new venue, Zankel Hall. Children are invited to sing and interact with the musical duo Polygraph Lounge during an exciting 45-minute “Sound Playground” event. Tickets are only $6 each. CarnegieKids concerts will also be presented in March 2010.
