Reporting to the Digital Collections Manager, this position works as part of the Archives team to enact a strategic, centralized approach to digital asset management at Carnegie Hall by supporting the Digital Collections initiative, a comprehensive approach to ensure historic material is actively preserved for future generations and made accessible to internal stakeholders and the public via collections.carnegiehall.org. This position encompasses historic collections as well as current, actively used digital material.
- Refine and manage cataloging workflows that serve the mission of the Archives and Carnegie Hall’s daily activities, with a forward-looking approach that balances the necessity of responsible metadata management practices and accommodating public access and use of the Digital Collections. Training on current approach and practices will be provided.
- Plan, test, and execute procedures for ingesting Digital Collections material into the digital asset management system (DAMS). Training on current approach and practices will be provided.
- Ingest, organize, and describe digital assets with relevant and accurate metadata and keywords into DAMS, ensuring that all information on both historic and current digital content remains accurate and up to date in a fast-paced work environment.
- Manage and perform quality control and ingest of digitized archival material into the DAMS.
- As a liaison to CH staff, work with Digital Collections Manager to develop and conduct training sessions for Digital Collections/DAMS users with a focus on building stakeholders’ skillsets and improving training policies and procedures throughout the organization.
- Provide support and technical expertise to staff and external users, such as photographers, partners, and researchers.
- Support and help maintain digital preservation and sustainability policies and procedures by enforcing responsible data creation, use, and management.
- Liaise with DAMS contributors across Carnegie Hall departments to support metadata project planning, DAMS training and awareness, guidance on the use of standards, and efficient creation and maintenance of high-quality metadata.
- Provide support for maintaining and reconciling performance history data between the internal performance history database and the DAMS. Training on current approach and practices will be provided.
- Serve as alternate point of contact for Digital Collections Manager.
- Opportunity to expand beyond described responsibilities, including Archives research and reference requests, collection processing, or other tasks based on incumbent’s interests.
- Opportunity to participate in emerging or evolving archival content and data projects (e.g., web archiving initiative, Data Lab experiments) as a member of the Archives team. The Archives team is small but highly collaborative, and we value projects like these since they provide opportunities to engage with the broader professional community.
- EDUCATION: Master's degree with focus in Library and Information Science, Archival Management, Metadata, Cataloging, Data Management, or equivalent degree.
- Interest in joining a highly collaborative team whose work is guided by the Archives’ mission, with the ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and in person, for audiences with varying levels of technical experience or exposure to archival material.
- Must be highly organized with an interest in facilitating preservation and access using technology.
- Knowledge of policies, procedures, applications, and practices related to metadata standards, mapping, transformation, and management.
- Willingness to learn and apply a variety of data technologies and strategies to evaluate, correct, enhance, and migrate various data sets and structures into a common, shared metadata schema.
- Strong familiarity with digital object life cycles and understanding of file-based workflows and experience with digital asset or content management practices and systems.
- Experience (or knowledge of) practices for normalizing large or complex data sets and sources.
- Strong interest in ongoing learning and sharing expertise with internal stakeholders and peer communities.
- Interest in, or willingness to learn about, music and music history across many genres and eras.
