Carnegie Hall December 2014 Calendar Updates

THE CLASSICAL STYLE
Thursday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m.
(Zankel Hall)

The New York premiere of Steven Stucky and Jeremy Denk's The Classical Style: An Opera (of Sorts) features conductor Robert Spano leading The Knights together with soprano Jennifer Zetlan; mezzo-sopranos Rachel Calloway and Peabody Southwell; tenors Dominic Armstrong and Keith Jameson; baritone Kim Josephson; and bass-baritones Aubrey Allicock and Ashraf Sewailam. The work, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall, is directed by Mary Birnbaum. Also on the program is Mozart's Fantasia and Sonata in C Minor, K. 475/457 featuring pianist Jeremy Denk (pictured at right).


 

THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA
Friday, December 5 at 8:00 p.m.

Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads The Philadelphia Orchestra in Brahms's Symphony No. 3 in F Major, Op. 90; Haydn's Cello Concerto in C Major, Hob. VIIb: 1 with Jean-Guihen Queyras; and R. Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier Suite.


 

TEATRO REGIO TORINO
Sunday, December 7 at 2:00 p.m.
(Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage)

ARTIST UPDATE:
Basses Marco Spotti as Gualtiero and Gabriele Sagona as Gessler have been added to the cast of the concert performance of Rossini's Guglielmo Tell (William Tell) by Teatro Regio Torino and Chorus Teatro Regio Torino conducted by Gianandrea Noseda. The rest of the cast is unchanged with baritone Dalibor Jenis in the title role, tenor John Osborn as Arnoldo, soprano Angela Meade as Matilde, bass Fabrizio Beggi as Melchtal, soprano Marina Bucciarelli as Jemmy, mezzo-soprano Anna Maria Chiuri as Edvige, tenor Mikeldi Atxalandabaso as un pescatore, tenor Saverio Fiore as Rodolfo, and bass Paolo Maria Orecchia as Leutoldo.

The young Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov returns to Carnegie Hall, performing Bach's Fantasy and Fugue for Organ in G Minor, BWV 542 (transcribed for piano by Franz Liszt, S. 463); Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 32 in C Minor, Op. 111; and Liszt's Transcendental Études, S. 139.

Pianist Yuja Wang's program has been revised and includes works by Schubert, Scriabin, and Balakirev.


 

AUDRA MCDONALD

Six-time Tony Award winner and Musical America's 2014 Musician of the Year, Audra McDonald returns to Carnegie Hall with Music Director Andy Einhorn, bassist Mark Vanderpoel, and drummer Gene Lewin. Program is to be announced.


 

THE NEW YORK POPS

Stars of Broadway's South Pacific Kelli O'Hara and Matthew Morrison (also Fox's Glee) reunite in a program entitled Kelli and Matthew: Home for the Holidays with The New York Pops led by Music Director Steven Reineke, with Essential Voices USA.


 

CARNEGIE HALL FAMILY HOLIDAY CONCERT:
THE NEW YORK POPS

PROGRAM UPDATE:
Carnegie Hall celebrates the 50th anniversary of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, presenting The New York Pops, Music Director Steven Reineke, narrator John Bolton, New York Theatre Ballet, TADA! Youth Theater, and Essential Voices USA in a special Holiday Family Concert featuring the music from the iconic TV special, in addition to traditional holiday favorites, a sing-along, and other special surprises.


 

NEW YORK STRING ORCHESTRA
Wednesday, December 24 at 7:00 p.m.
Sunday, December 28 at 2:00 p.m.
(Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage)

The New York String Orchestra, featuring young musicians participating in the annual New York String Orchestra Seminar, returns to Carnegie Hall for two evenings of performances conducted by Jaime Laredo. On Wednesday, December 24 at 7:00 p.m., the orchestra performs an all-Mozart program including the overture to The Impresario; Symphony No. 39 in E-flat Major, K.543; and Oboe Concerto in C Major, K. 314 featuring soloist Liang Wang. On Sunday, December 28 at 2:00 p.m., the orchestra is joined by violinist Augustin Hadelich for Barber's Violin Concerto, Op. 14. Also on the program is Tchaikovsky's Serenade in C Major for Strings, Op. 48, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Op. 68, "Pastoral".
