(NEW YORK, NY; June 15, 2022)—Carnegie Hall continues its summertime tradition, shining a spotlight on extraordinary teen musicians from across the country with concerts by the Hall’s three acclaimed national youth ensembles—the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA), NYO2, and NYO Jazz. Each ensemble, collaborating with some of the world’s leading artists, takes to the famed stage over the course of one week, performing in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage from July 28–August 1.

NYO Jazz—an extraordinary ensemble launched in 2018 showcasing the bright future of American jazz—kicks off the week’s musical festivities, performing on Thursday, July 28 at 8:00 p.m. Led by trumpeter/Artistic Director Sean Jones and featuring Grammy Award-nominated vocalist Jazzmeia Horn, the evening’s program will explore diverse repertoire ranging from big band standards to contemporary pieces exploring jazz’s influence on hip-hop, R&B, and pop music with NYO Jazz performing selections from Ms. Horn’s new album Dear Love; a new Carnegie Hall-commissioned work by Brooklyn-based composer and Secret Society bandleader Darcy James Argue; a piece inspired by the life and work of activist Ida B. Wells by bassist Endea Owens; a new arrangement of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by John Clayton; and standards by Bob Brookmeyer, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Mary Lou Williams among others. Following this Carnegie Hall appearance, NYO Jazz will embark on its first-ever US tour with debut performances in: Cleveland, OH on July 30 (Tri-C Metro Auditorium); Chautauqua, NY on August 1 (Chautauqua Amphitheater); Pittsburgh, PA on August 2 (The August Wilson African American Cultural Center); Chicago, IL on August 4 (Navy Pier, Lake Stage in Polk Bros Park); Detroit, MI on August 5 (Orchestra Hall, The Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center); Madison, WI on August 7 (Wisconsin Union Theater); and Washington, D.C. on August 9 (The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts). NYO Jazz’s performance in Detroit will be available for audiences everywhere via a webcast. Just prior to the ensemble’s summer concerts, NYO Jazz’s debut album, We’re Still Here, featuring Artistic Director and Bandleader/trumpeter Sean Jones and special guest Melissa Aldana on tenor saxophone, plus an appearance by trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, will be released by Platoon on June 24, 2022.

On Friday, July 29 at 8:00 p.m., the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA) performs Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 and Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E Minor, featuring renowned cellist Alisa Weilerstein, under the baton of conductor Daniel Harding. This concert by NYO-USA will be heard by music lovers worldwide through the Carnegie Hall Live radio broadcast and digital series, created in partnership with WQXR. After their Carnegie Hall performance, NYO-USA embarks on a European tour, making debuts at the Ravello Festival and the Lucerne Festival, as well as return performances at the Young Euro Classic festival at Konzerthaus Berlin and the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam. The orchestra's performance in Berlin will be available for audiences everywhere via a webcast. This marks NYO-USA’s eighth major tour to music capitals around the globe, including appearances throughout Europe, Latin America, Asia, and coast-to-coast across the United States.

Concluding the week on Monday, August 1 at 8:00 p.m., conductor Mei-Ann Chen leads NYO2—an inspiring orchestra featuring outstanding young musicians, ages 14-17—joined by pianist Aaron Diehl, presenting a program including Gershwin’s Piano Concerto, Jessie Montgomery’s Soul Force, and Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances. Prior to this Carnegie Hall concert, NYO2 travels to Miami Beach for a six-day residency, made possible through a partnership with the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy (NWS), culminating with a performance at the New World Center on Saturday, July 30 at 7:30 p.m. This Miami concert will also be available via a webcast for audiences everywhere. NYO2 will be joined on stage in both Miami and New York City by Fellows from the New World Symphony, who will also serve as coaches during the orchestra’s summer 2022 training residency.

Each summer, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute brings together extraordinary teen classical and jazz musicians from across the country to form its highly-acclaimed national youth ensembles. Following a highly selective audition process and two-week training residency at Purchase College, State University of New York with faculty made up of principal players from top professional orchestras and leading jazz masters, these remarkable teenagers perform at Carnegie Hall and embark on tours to some of the great music capitals around the world, serving as dynamic music ambassadors. Since launching the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (ages 16-19) in 2013, Carnegie Hall has built on the program’s success by introducing two additional ensembles. These include NYO2, a sister ensemble for younger teens (ages 14-17) in 2016, and NYO Jazz in 2018. Each of these highly-selective programs—free to all participants—is dedicated to the proposition that talented young musicians thrive when they have the opportunity to expand their musical, social, and cultural horizons and share their artistry with audiences around the globe. Since the program’s inception in 2013, the ensembles have performed in leading concert halls in 15 countries around the world, thrilling audiences across Europe, North America, South America, and Asia, collaborating with internationally-renowned conductors and guest soloists.
