Angel Blue Replaces Renée Fleming with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Met Orchestra on Thursday, June 22
Ms. Blue is Soloist in Act IV of Verdi’s Otello Alongside Tenor Russell Thomas
(NEW YORK, NY; February 21, 2023)— Carnegie Hall today announced that soprano Angel Blue will appear as soloist with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Met Orchestra on Thursday, June 22 at 8:00 p.m., singing Act IV of Verdi’s Otello alongside tenor Russell Thomas. Ms. Blue steps in for soprano Renée Fleming who has withdrawn from this performance. The orchestra’s June 22 program also includes Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story; the world premiere of Matthew Aucoin’s Lear Sketches; and Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. About the Artist Grammy Award-winning soprano Angel Blue opened the Metropolitan Opera’s 2019–2020 season as Bess in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. She reprised the role in fall 2021, immediately following her role debut as Destiny/Loneliness/Greta in the Met’s historic 2021–2022 season opener of Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones, the first production at the Met by a Black composer. Ms. Blue was also the 2020 recipient of the Met’s Beverly Sills Award and the first Black person to receive the honor. She has appeared with nearly every major opera company, including the Teatro alla Scala; Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Vienna State Opera; Semperoper Dresden; San Francisco Opera; Seattle Opera; Oper Frankfurt; and San Diego Opera. Also active on the concert platform, Ms. Blue has performed in recital and in concert in over thirty-five countries. Important orchestral engagements have included Porgy and Bess at the Berliner Philharmoniker under Sir Simon Rattle and with The Philadelphia Orchestra under Marin Alsop, Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with the Münchener Philharmoniker under the baton of Zubin Mehta, and Verdi’s Requiem in Sydney, Australia with Oleg Caetani. Ms. Blue debuted in recital at the Ravinia Festival in August of 2019, after which she joined many of her international colleagues at the 2019 Richard Tucker Gala at Carnegie Hall. She most recently performed at Carnegie Hall in 2022, appearing as soloist with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and The Philadelphia Orchestra. Ms. Blue was born and raised in California and completed her musical studies at UCLA. She was a member of the Young Artists Program at the Los Angeles Opera, after which she moved to Europe to begin her international career. She made her United States operatic debut as Musetta in La bohème at Los Angeles Opera and subsequently debuted at La Scala in the same role. She first sang Mimì at English National Opera in London in 2014 and has since sung the role for her debuts at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in 2015, the Vienna State Opera in 2016, the Met in 2017, and the Canadian Opera Company in 2019. She sang her first Violetta at Seattle Opera in 2017, reprising the role for her debut at the Royal Opera House and her return to La Scala. Tickets, priced at $51–$170, are available at the Carnegie Hall Box Office, 154 West 57th Street, or can be charged to major credit cards by calling CarnegieCharge at 212-247-7800 or by visiting the Carnegie Hall website, carnegiehall.org. For events in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage presented by Carnegie Hall, a limited number of seats, priced at $10, will be available day-of-concert beginning at 11:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 12:00 noon on Sunday until one hour before the performance or until supply lasts. The exceptions are Weill Music Institute and gala events. These $10 tickets are available to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis at the Carnegie Hall Box Office only. There is a two-ticket limit per customer. In addition, for all Carnegie Hall presentations in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage a limited number of partial view (seats with obstructed or limited sight lines or restricted leg room) will be sold for 50% of the full price.
