Carnegie Hall October 2023 Calendar Updates

CARNEGIE HALL’S OPENING NIGHT GALA CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at 7:00 PM Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra open Carnegie Hall’s 2022–2023 season with a celebratory gala performance that includes Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition (popularly arranged for orchestra by Ravel) and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto—featuring violinist Leonidas Kavakos. Maestro Muti and the orchestra return the following evening with an Italian-themed program: Felix Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony, Richard Strauss’s Aus Italien, and the New York premiere of Philip Glass’s The Triumph of the Octagon, inspired by Italy and written to honor Muti.


FAMILY DAY: 50 YEARS OF HIP HOP Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 12:00 PM (Resnick Education Wing) Enjoy free, interactive, and fun musical activities and performances in Carnegie Hall’s Resnick Education Wing. Recommended for families with children ages 3–10, Family Day is an anticipated musical adventure that returns each season with brand-new themes and activities. This fall, join us for a celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip hop. Activities are ongoing from 12 PM to 4 PM.


ORCHESTRA OF ST. LUKE’S Thursday, October 12, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Orchestra of St. Luke’s kicks off its 2023–2024 Carnegie Hall series with conductor Jahja Ling leading the energetic overture to Rossini’s Semiramide and Kodály’s quintessentially Hungarian Dances of GalántaLang Lang joins the orchestra as soloist in Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2, also collaborating with his wife, pianist Gina Alice Redlinger in the composer’s Carnival of the Animals.


ISATA KANNEH-MASON, Piano Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Weill Recital Hall) Pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason makes her solo recital debut in Weill Recital Hall, following recent sold-out performances with her brother, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason. Her program includes Haydn’s Piano Sonata in C Major, Hob. XVI: 50; Fanny Mendelssohn’s Easter Sonata; Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen, and Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 3 in B Minor, Op. 58.


THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Music and Artistic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin leadsThe Philadelphia Orchestra in Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Higdon’s Fanfare Ritmico, plus two Rachmaninoff works—the Symphonic Dances (dedicated to The Philadelphia Orchestra) and his Symphony No. 2—in honor of the composer’s 150th anniversary year.


BELCEA QUARTET Thursday, October 19, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Zankel Hall) ARTIST UPDATE: The Belcea Quartet—renowned for its Beethoven performances—presents a recital that opens with Beethoven’s String Quartet in C Minor, Op. 18, No. 4. The program also includes Bartók's String Quartet No.1 and Debussy’s String Quartet in G Minor. Please note that second violinist Axel Schacher has retired from the Belcea Quartet. Suyeon Kang has been appointed as the quartet’s new second violinist and will perform at this Carnegie Hall concert.


KHATIA BUNIATISHVILI, Piano Thursday, October 19, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) PROGRAM UPDATE: Pianist Khatia Buniatishvili returns to Carnegie Hall for her highly anticipated debut in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. In a concert she has titled Labyrinth, Ms. Buniatishvili performs multiple works by Chopin and Liszt; Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 1; Schubert’s Impromptu in G-flat Major, D. 899, No. 3; and piano arrangements derived from works by J. S. Bach and François Couperin. Previously announced works by Beethoven and Stravinsky are no longer on this updated program.


SPHINX VIRTUOSI Friday, October 20, 2023 at 7:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) The Sphinx Virtuosi pairs time-tested string music with music by some of today’s most compelling composers. The ensemble, a chamber orchestra comprised of alums of the renowned Sphinx Competition, perform New York premieres by bassist, composer, and 2014 Sphinx Competition winner Xavier Foley and Quenton Blache. The program also includes Aria (Cantilena) from Bachianas brasileiras No. 5 by Villa-Lobos; Perkinson’s Sinfonietta No. 2; and original songs by cellist and vocalist Abel Selaocoe, who performs with the ensemble.


KENNY BARRON VOYAGE TRIO Friday, October 20, 2023 at 9:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron makes his long-awaited return to Carnegie Hall during his 80th-birthday celebration year. Barron’s long-standing, Grammy Award-nominated trio performs repertoire that spans 60 years of Barron’s original compositions and influential classics by Thelonious Monk plus more.


ALEXANDRE KANTOROW, Piano Sunday, October 22, 2023 at 2:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Just announced as the recipient of the 2024 Gilmore Artist Award: French pianist and 2019 International Tchaikovsky Competition gold medalist Alexandre Kantorow makes his Carnegie Hall recital debut, performing works by Brahms, J. S. Bach, Liszt, and Schubert.


GATEWAYS CHAMBER PLAYERS Sunday, October 22, 2023 at 3:00 PM (Zankel Hall) Musicians from the acclaimed Gateways Music Festival—including top principal players from orchestras around the country—perform Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale and Wynton Marsalis’s A Fiddler’s Tale, conducted by Damien Sneed. Special guest Phylicia Rashad joins as narrator.


JOYCE DIDONATO MASTER CLASSES Sunday, October 22, 2023 at 4:00 PM Monday, October 23, 2023 at 4:00 PM Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 4:00 PM (Resnick Education Wing) Renowned mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato returns to Carnegie Hall to lead this impactful series of public master classes focusing on the intricacies of operatic singing. Four young professional vocalists will be selected to participate in the series which will be held in the Hall’s Judith and Burton Resnick Education Wing.


JEAN-YVES THIBAUDET, Piano LISA BATIASHVILI, Violin GAUTIER CAPUÇON, Cello Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Three exemplary musicians—pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, violinist Lisa Batiashvili, and cellist Gautier Capuçon—come together to perform one of Haydn’s later piano trios, the Piano Trio in E Major, Hob, XV: 28 (a lively early standout of the genre), followed by two chamber-music masterpieces: Ravel’s Piano Trio and Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 2 in C Minor.


ENGLISH BAROQUE SOLOISTS Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at 8:00 PM Thursday, October 26, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) ARTIST UPDATE: Conductor Dinis Sousa makes his Carnegie Hall debut, stepping in for Sir John Eliot Gardiner to lead the English Baroque Soloists and Monteverdi Choir in two choral masterpieces over two concerts. On October 25, they present J. S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor. The following evening, they return for the first complete performance of Handel’s L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato at Carnegie Hall since 1895. The English Baroque Soloists and Monteverdi Choir last performed at Carnegie Hall in 2015.


THE KNIGHTS Thursday, October 26, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Zankel Hall) With this concert, The Knights kick off a new three-concert Carnegie Hall series that expands the boundaries of classical music, led by artistic directors Colin and Eric Jacobson. For this performance, the ensemble is joined by MacArthur Fellow and Grammy Award–winning mandolinist, singer, and songwriter Chris Thile for the New York premiere of ATTENTION! (A narrative song cycle for extroverted mandolinist and orchestra, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall). Mr. Thile also performs works by Caroline Shaw and J.S. Bach on a concert that includes music by Dvoƙák (in an arrangement by Curtis Stewart) and Colin Jacobson.


QUARTETTO DI CREMONA Thursday, October 26, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Weill Recital Hall) Quartetto di Cremona makes its Carnegie Hall debut in Weill Recital Hall with a program that includes Wolf’s Italian Serenade, plus string quartets by Ravel and Beethoven.


TED HEARNE: DOROTHEA Friday, October 27, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Zankel Hall) Composer and vocalist Ted Hearne is featured in the New York premiere of Dorothea, his experimental song cycle co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall with text by American poet Dorothea Lasky. These direct and poignant songs color Lasky’s pathos-ridden, darkly funny work, featuring rhapsodic textures, a synth-pop veneer, and charismatic duets with Hearne and acclaimed vocalist and electronic artist Eliza Bagg.


THE NEW YORK POPS Friday, October 27, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Joined by a quartet of Broadway’s brightest stars, Hailey KilgoreDerek KlenaJavier Muñoz, and Tony Award winner Ali Stroker, The New York Pops and Music Director Steven Reineke perform music from some of the most iconic new classics, including Hamilton, Spring Awakening, Wicked, The Last Five Years, and Waitress.


SIMON BODE, Tenor JONATHAN WARE, Piano Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 7:30 PM (Weill Recital Hall) Acclaimed tenor Simon Bode collaborates with pianist Jonathan Ware, performing a program of nineteenth-century art song and opera to include works by Wagner, Duparc, Liszt, and selections from Wolf’s Mörike Lieder.


ENSEMBLE CONNECT Monday, October 30, 2023at 7:30 PM (Weill Recital Hall) A new cohort of Ensemble Connect musicians kick off their fellowship with a performance of Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet. Also featured is Barber’s Summer Music, and Missy Mazzoli’s Still Life with Avalanche.

 

LEA MICHELE Monday, October 30, 2023 at 8:00 PM (Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage) Following her success on Broadway in Spring Awakening and Funny Girl, television’s Glee, and an impressive series of albums and books, Lea Michele makes her highly anticipated Carnegie Hall debut.


CAMILLE’S RAINBOW Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at 10:00 AM Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at 11:30 AM (Resnick Education Wing) Camille’s Rainbow is an interactive performance especially designed for babies and toddlers (ages 0–2). This immersive event is co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall and Minnesota Opera and features artists and storytellers who invite audiences to co-create with them.
