Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel and Los Angeles Philharmonic kick off Carnegie Hall’s 2024–2025 season on Tuesday, October 8 with a festive gala performance featuring Carnegie Hall Perspectives artist Lang Lang as soloist in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, plus baritone Gustavo Castillo singing Ginastera’s Estancia. This Opening Night performance will be heard live by listeners around the world, broadcast on WQXR 105.9 FM in New York and streamed online at wqxr.org and carnegiehall.org/wqxr.

Mr. Dudamel and the Philharmonic return for two additional consecutive evenings. On October 9, they present the New York premiere of Dzonot, a new work for cellist Alisa Weilerstein by Gabriela Ortiz, holder of the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair, and Felix Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, narrated by Maria Valverde who brings the colorful tale to life in Spanish alongside New York City’s Musica Sacra choir and soloists Jana McIntyre and Deepa Johnny. For their final performance, Maestro Dudamel and the orchestra reunite with internationally beloved Mexican singer-songwriter Natalia Lafourcade, who returns following her sold-out Carnegie Hall debut in 2022. The October 10 performance opens with John Adams’s Short Ride in a Fast Machine, Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 9, and Gabriela Ortiz’s Antrópolis.

These three performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic launch Carnegie Hall’s season-long festival Nuestros sonidos: Celebrating Latin Culture in the US.

Across three events, she shares her extraordinary expertise with rising professional singers as they workshop and perform opera arias and more. Hear what these exceptional singers can do under the guidance of an artist called “a model of singing in which all components of the art form—technique, sound, color nuance, diction—come together in service to expression and eloquence” (The New York Times).

THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA

The Philadelphia Orchestra returns for three concerts this season, all featuring symphonies by Gustav Mahler. In October, Music and Artistic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads the ensemble in Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato.

SPHINX VIRTUOSI

The Sphinx Virtuosi, a chamber orchestra comprised of alumni of the Sphinx Competition, return to Carnegie Hall with violinists Njioma Chinyere Grievous and Tai Murray, and percussionist Britton-René Collins. Titled “American Form/s,” the evening includes New York premieres of a new work by Curtis Stewart, and new arrangements of Derrick Skye’s American Mirror, Part One and Joplin’s overture from Treemonisha (arr. Jannina Norpoth), all co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall. Also on the program is Carreño’s Tempo di Marcia from Serenade for Strings, Curtis Stewart’s Double Down, Invention #1 for Two Violins, and Levi Taylor’s Daydreaming (A Fantasy on Scott Joplin).

Pianist Daniil Trifonov returns for a thoughtfully curated solo recital which includes Tchaikovsky’s posthumously published Piano Sonata in C-sharp Minor, op. 80 as well as the composer’s suite from The Sleeping Beauty (arr. Mikhail Pletnev); along with Barber’s Piano Sonata, and a selection of waltzes by Chopin.

CONCERT FOR THE CHILDREN AND YOUTH OF UKRAINE

Carnegie Hall presents the Concert for the Children and Youth of Ukraine. Hosted by Liev Schreiber, the evening features a unique orchestra brought together for this benefit performance in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations as well as the New York-based diplomatic institutions of numerous participating countries with proceeds supporting children and families affected by the war in Ukraine. Conducted by Christoph Eschenbach, the Orchestra for Ukraine includes artists from more than a dozen countries united in passion and purpose, each of which has nominated at least one outstanding young professional musician to represent their nation, joined by members of Orchestra of St. Luke’s. The concert features celebrated violin virtuoso Anne-Sophie Mutter as well as music-making by the Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of New York. This program—influenced by the participants’ urgent support for Ukraine’s right to self-determination as a sovereign nation—include music by Ukraine’s most renowned living composer, Valentyn Silvestrov; beloved film scores by John Williams; and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with soloists to include soprano Olga Kulchynska, mezzo-soprano Emily D'Angelo, tenor Matthew Polenzani, and bass-baritone Vladyslav Buialskyi, plus the Oratorio Society of New York.

THE KNIGHTS

The Knights return with their three-concert series that expands the boundaries of classical music, led by artistic directors Colin and Eric Jacobsen. In October, the ensemble is joined by pianist Aaron Diehlfor two world premieres: a new arrangement by Michael P. Atkinson of Keith Jarrett’s Suite from Book of Ways and a new work by Michael Schachter (co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall), plus Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue (arr. Michael P. Atkinson). Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 rounds out the program.

ABEL SELAOCOE AND BANTU ENSEMBLE

Rising-star cellist, singer, improviser, and composer Abel Selaocoe moves with virtuosic grace between a variety of African and European traditions, wowing audiences in the process. “One of the most captivating performers [of] the classical music world ... labels seem to dissolve in front of him” (The Guardian). This concert, which features Selaocoe alongside his Bantu Ensemble, is part of this season’s Music of South Africa focus.

American Composers Orchestra(ACO) returns for two performances this season. In October, Mei-Ann Chen leads the ensemble in the world premieres of two new works by Paul Novak and Kebra-Seyoung Charles (featuring the composer on bass); the New York premieres of Michael Abels’s Guitar Concerto, “Borders” featuring Mak Grgic and The Bell by Ukrainian composer Victoria Poleva, featuring cellist Inbal Segev; and Curtis Stewart’s Embrace with the composer on violin.

CHIAROSCURO QUARTET

The Chiaroscuro Quartet returns to the Hall for the first time since 2019 performing Mozart’s String Quartet in C Major, K. 465, "Dissonance" paired with the last quartet written by Schubert.
